Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar)

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-88 Nova

See Figure 1

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nuts, retainers and cushions holding the sway bar links to the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts holding the stabilizer to the body.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bar with the links attached.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the bolts holding the links to the sway bar.
  12.  

To install:
  1. When reassembling, install new bolts to hold the links to the sway bar but do not tighten the bolts.
  2.  
  3. Place the bar in position and install but do not tighten the bolts holding the brackets to the body.
  4.  
  5. Connect the sway bar links to the control arms. Use new nuts and tighten them to 11 ft. lbs.
  6.

  1. Tighten the bracket bolts to 9 ft. lbs. and then tighten the bolts holding the sway bar to the links to 22 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Install the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Lower the car to the ground.
  6.  

1989-90 Prizm

See Figure 1

  1. Using either a transmission jack or a floor jack with a broad piece of wood, support the fuel tank from below. Use care not to dent or deform the tank.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel tank retaining straps.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the strut assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar bracket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bar.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Place the bar in position, attach the body retaining brackets and then connect the links to the strut on each side.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the body bracket bolts to 14 ft. lbs. and the link bolts (both ends) to 26 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the fuel tank straps and tighten the bolts to 29 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tank support jack.
  8.  

1990-92

See Figure 1

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the strut assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the bar links.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar mounting bolts and remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the stabilizer bar to the vehicle and install the stabilizer bar mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar to the bar links.
  4.  
  5. Connect the stabilizer links to the strut assemblies. </
