Combination Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-92

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower dash cover and the air duct.
  4.  
  5. On Prizm vehicles, remove the upper and lower steering column covers. On Nova vehicles, remove the lower column cover; the upper cover will come off with the switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiring at the connector.
  10.  
  11. Unscrew the mounting screws and remove the switch. The Nova switch will come off with the upper column cover.
  12.  

To install:
  1. When reinstalling, place the switch in position and tighten the bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring harness and reinstall the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the column cover(s).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower dash trim panel.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

1993 Models

See Figure 3

  1. Disable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the SRS coil assembly as follows:
    1. With the SRS disabled, remove the steering wheel.
    2.  
    3. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
    4.  
    5. Unclip and set aside the left front carpet retainer.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood release lever from the knee bolster.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 trim caps and unbolt and remove the knee bolster from the instrument panel.
    10.  
    11. Untape the SRS coil assembly harness from the combination switch harness.
    12.  
    13. Disconnect the electrical connector from the SRS coil.
    14.  
    15. Remove the 4 screws and remove the SRS coil assembly from the combination switch.
    16.

  5. Disconnect the combination switch electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 screws and remove the combination switch from the steering column.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the 4 screws and the combination switch to the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Connect the combination switch electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Turn the spiral cable on the combination switch counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the alignment mark. The connector should be straight up.
  6.  
  7. Install the SRS coil assembly by reversing removal Step 2, above.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel (align matchmarks) onto the shaft and torque nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Enable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
  12.
