REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Nova
  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the combination switch.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the hole cover clamp screw.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pinch bolt from the yoke.
  8.  
  9. Remove the yoke from the steering gear.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts holding the lower column mounting brackets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts holding the upper column to the instrument panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the column from the car.
  16.  

To install:
  1. When reinstalling, place the column assembly into position and install the upper and lower bracket nuts and bolts finger tight.
  2.  
  3. Position the column assembly so the end of the lower support holes touch the mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper and lower support nuts and bolts to 19 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Install the yoke and tighten the pinch bolt to 26 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Install the hole cover clamp.
  10.  
  11. Install the combination switch.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering wheel.
  14.  

Prizm
1989-92

While it is possible to remove the column with the steering wheel attached, it is much easier if the wheel is removed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the left side lower dash trim panel; let it rest on the floor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower column covers.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wiring harnesses to the combination switch and the ignition switch.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the park/lock cable from the lock cylinder housing. (automatic transmission only)
  10.  
  11. Remove the air filter assembly to gain access to the steering gear.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the yoke from the steering gear.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower column mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper column mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering column from the car.
  20.  

To install:
  1. When reinstalling, place the column in position and tighten the upper and lower mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Connect the shaft yoke to the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Install the air filter assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wiring harnesses to the combination switch and the ignition switch.
  8.  
  9. Connect the park/lock cable to the lock cylinder housing. Make certain the clip is firmly seated.
  10.  
  11. Install the upper and lower column covers.
  12.  
  13. Reinstall the left side lower dash trim panel.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Prizm
1993
  1. Disable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
  6.  
  7. Unclip and set aside the left front carpet retainer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood release lever from the knee bolster.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 trim caps and unbolt and remove the knee bolster from the instrument panel.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the steering column pinch bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 nuts and 2 bolts and disconnect the steering column from the instrument panel.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the steering column to the instrument panel and tighten the 2 nuts and 2 bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the steering column pinch bolt and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the steering column electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper and lower steering column trim covers.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hood release lever to the knee bolster.
  10.  
  11. Bolt the knee bolster to the instrument panel and install the 2 trim caps.
  12.  
  13. Install the left front carpet retainer.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering wheel as outlined earlier in this Section.
  16.  
  17. Enable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
  18.
