REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1985-92

CAUTION
Do not attempt to remove or install the steering wheel by hammering on it. Damage to the energy-absorbing steering column could result.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the trim pad retaining screws from the back side of the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Lift the trim pad and horn button assembly(ies) from the wheel.
  6.

  1. Remove the steering wheel hub retaining nut and washer.
  2.  
  3. Scratch matchmarks on the hub and shaft to aid in correct installation.
  4.  
  5. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the wheel retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs.

  1. Disable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
  2.  
  3. Place the front wheels in a straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inflator module as follows:
    1. With the SRS disabled, remove the 2 side trim covers from the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 Torx® head screws, release the connector position assurance (CPA) and disconnect the upper steering column connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the inflator module from the steering wheel.
    6.

CAUTION
When carrying a live inflator module, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. When placing on a bench always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface of a bench.

  1. Disconnect the horn electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and shaft and remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, using a puller.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering wheel on the shaft, aligning the matchmarks. Tighten the retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the horn electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the inflator module as follows:

CAUTION
When carrying a live inflator module, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you.

    1. Install the inflator module to the steering wheel and connect the upper steering column connector and the CPA.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 Torx head screws attaching the inflator module to the steering wheel and tighten to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    4.  
    5. IInstall the 2 side trim covers to the steering column.
    6.  


  1. Enable the SRS as outlined earlier in this Section.
