REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front
INSTRUMENT PANEL MOUNTED

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the front speaker grille screws, then lift and remove the grille.
  4.  

On some models, the grille screws also retain the speaker. Always check to make sure that no additional fasteners are hidden under the grilles.

  1. If equipped, remove the speaker-to-instrument panel retainers.
  2.  
  3. Lift the speaker and disengage the electrical connection(s), then remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connection(s), then install the speaker in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, install the speaker-to-instrument panel screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the speaker grille and tighten the screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

DOOR MOUNTED SPEAKERS-PICK-UP MODELS

Some trucks may be equipped with door mounted radio speakers. Access to factory mounted speakers on some vehicles usually requires removal of inner door trim panel. Aftermarket speakers may be mounted in a variety of ways, but will often not require trim panel removal. In order to save time, be sure removal of the panel is necessary before starting. If the grille fasteners are accessible with the trim panel installed, then panel removal may not be necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. If necessary, remove the door trim panel. For details on door trim panel removal, please refer to the procedures in Fuel System of this guide.
  4.  
  5. Drill out the heads of the old speaker retaining rivets. Again, aftermarket systems may not contain rivets. If equipped with screws, unthread and remove them.
  6.  
  7. Pull the speaker from the door and unplug the electrical connectors, then remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connections, then install the speaker in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, install the screws. If equipped with rivets, install them.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the door trim panel. Refer to Body & Trim of this repair guide for this procedure.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Rear
pick-up models -extended cab

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear body side trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the necessary wiring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the speaker retaining nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the speaker and fasten retaining nuts to 11 inch lbs. (1.2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the speaker electrical connections.
  4.  
  5. Install the trim panel, then connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

two door utility vehicles-1994 models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the ashtray screws and remove the ashtray.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the speaker cover screws and remove the cover.
  6.  
  7. Unplug any necessary electrical connections from the speaker.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speaker retaining nuts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the speaker from the cover.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker to the cover and fasten retaining nuts to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the speaker electrical connections.
  4.  
  5. Install the speaker cover and its retainers. Tighten the retainers to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the ashtray and its retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  10.  

two door utility vehicles-1995-99 models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear quarter trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the speaker retainers and slide the speaker assembly forward.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the speaker electrical connections.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connections and place the speaker into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the speaker retainers and the rear quarter trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  6.  

FOUR door utility vehicles

Access to factory mounted speakers on some vehicles usually requires removal of inner door trim panel. Aftermarket speakers may be mounted in a variety of ways, but will often not require trim panel removal. In order to save time, be sure removal of the panel is necessary before starting. If the grille fasteners are accessible with the trim panel installed, then panel removal may not be necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear side door trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Drill out the heads of the old speaker retaining rivets. Again, aftermarket systems may not contain rivets.
  6.  
  7. Pull the speaker from the door and unplug the electrical connectors, then remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connections, then install the speaker in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the rivets, or suitable self tapping screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the door trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
