Endgate/Liftgate Lock Cylinder

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1994 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Open the tailgate/endgate to the horizontal position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tailgate trim panel, then remove the water deflector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tailgate inner panel reinforcement from the endgate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tailgate lock rods.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lock cylinder retainer by working it through the access hole.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lock cylinder through the outer panel.
  12.

To install:
  1. If equipped, connect the actuator cable.
  2.  
  3. Work the lock cylinder through the inner panel and secure with the retainer.
  4.  
  5. Install the tailgate lock rods.
  6.  
  7. Connect the tailgate inner panel reinforcement to the endgate.
  8.  
  9. Install the water deflector, then the tailgate trim panel.
  10.  

1995-96 Models

See Figure 2

New lock cylinders are available as replacement parts. If, for any reason, lock cylinders require replacement, apply a coat of GM No. 12345120 or equivalent lubricant inside the lock case and cylinder keyway prior to installation.

This procedure requires GM tool No. J-20922-A rivet installer, or equivalent tool.

  1. Open the tailgate, then remove the tailgate handle by unfastening the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tailgate trim panel by unfastening the screws securing the panel to the endgate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the access panel cover:
    1. Remove the lock rods from the door handle.
    2.  
    3. Drill out the access panel rivets.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lock rods from the access panel, then remove the access panel cover.
    6.  
    7. Unplug the electrical connector from the liftgate actuator.
    8.

  7. Remove the liftgate latch assembly by removing the latch-to-bracket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the liftgate striker assembly by removing the striker bracket bolts and bracket.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, unplug the electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the lock cylinder retaining clip, then remove the lock cylinder.

To install:
  1. Install the lock cylinder using the retaining clip.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, attach the electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the liftgate striker assembly by installing the striker bracket with the retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the liftgate latch assembly using the latch-to-bracket bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the access panel cover:
    1. Engage the electrical connector to the liftgate actuator.
    2.  
    3. Install the access panel cover, then connect the lock rods to the cover.
    4.  
    5. Using tool No. J-20922-A or equivalent, install rivets to the access panel and endgate.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install the tailgate trim panel using the retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the tailgate handle using the retaining screws.
  14.  

1997-99 Models
endgate

New lock cylinders are available as replacement parts. If, for any reason, lock cylinders require replacement, apply a coat of GM No. 12345120 or equivalent lubricant inside the lock case and cylinder keyway prior to installation.

  1. Open the endgate and unfasten screws that attach the inside handle to the endgate, then remove the handle.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the screw that attaches the endgate trim panel to the endgate latch support.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the screws that attach the trim panel to the endgate. If necessary, release the retaining clips from the upper edge and sides of the trim panel, then lift the panel up to release the tabs along the bottom edge.
  6.  
  7. Mark the location of the endgate window latch, this will aid during installation.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the endgate bellcrank rod from the endgate inside handle assembly.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the screws that attach endgate cover to the endgate, release the endgate latch rods from the latch rod clips, then remove the endgate cover.
  12.  
  13. Unplug the necessary electrical connections.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the endgate window latch retainers and remove the latch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cargo lamp switch.
  18.  
  19. Mark the location of the endgate window latch support, this will aid during installation.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the endgate window latch support retainers and remove the latch support.
  22.  
  23. Unplug any necessary electrical connections.
  24.  
  25. Unfasten the clip that attaches lock cylinder to the endgate, and then remove the lock cylinder.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Place the lock cylinder into position and install the lock cylinder retaining clip.
  2.  
  3. Attach any electrical connections that were unplugged earlier.
  4.  
  5. Align the endgate window latch support with the marks made prior to removal and install its retainers. Tighten the retainers to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the cargo lamp switch.
  8.  
  9. Align the endgate window latch with the marks made prior to removal, and then install its retainers. Tighten the retainers to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach any electrical connectors unplugged earlier.
  12.  
  13. Place the endgate cover in position and secure the endgate latch rods to the latch rod clips.
  14.  
  15. Install the screws that attach the cover to the endgate. Tighten the screws to 11 inch lbs. (1.2 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Attach the endgate bellcrank rod to the inside handle.
  18.  
  19. Place the endgate trim panel in position and install its retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the screw that attaches the trim panel to the window latch support. Tighten the screw to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Place the endgate inside handle into position, install the screws and tighten them to 25 inch lbs. (2.8 Nm).
  24.  

liftgate
  1. Open the liftgate window and unfasten the screw which attaches the liftgate trim panel to the liftgate window latch support.
  2.  
  3. Open the liftgate and remove the trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Mark the location of the liftgate window latch, this will aid during installation.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the necessary electrical connections.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the liftgate window latch retainers and remove the latch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cargo lamp switch.
  12.  
  13. Mark the location of the liftgate window latch support, this will aid during installation.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the liftgate window latch support retainers and remove the latch support.
  16.  
  17. Unplug any necessary electrical connections.
  18.  
  19. Unfasten the clip that attaches lock cylinder to the liftgate, and then remove the lock cylinder.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Place the lock cylinder into position and install the lock cylinder retaining clip.
  2.  
  3. Attach any electrical connections that were unplugged earlier.
  4.  
  5. Align the liftgate window latch support with the marks made prior to removal and install its retainers. Tighten the retainers to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the cargo lamp switch.
  8.  
  9. Align the liftgate window latch with the marks made prior to removal, then install its retainers. Tighten the retainers to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach any electrical connectors unplugged earlier.
  12.  
  13. Place the liftgate trim panel in position and install the screw that attaches the trim panel to the window latch support. Tighten the screw to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  14.
