REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1994 Pick-Up Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the lower shroud insulator screws and remove the lower sound insulator panels from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the courtesy lamp screws and allow the lamp to hang.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front speaker grills and the speakers.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the Data Link Connectors (DLC) and separate the DLC from the steering column panel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column filler panel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove the instrument cluster and the heater and/or A/C controls from the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the radio, and then pry the defroster from the grille using a suitable tool.
  18.  
  19. Unfastenve box striker screws and remove the striker.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the glove box screws and remove the glove box from the instrument panel.
  22.  
  23. Remove the door sill trim plates and the cowl side trim panels.
  24.  
  25. Remove the parking brake handle.
  26.  
  27. Unfasten the steering column nuts and lower the steering column.
  28.  
  29. Unfasten the four lower instrument panel screws. Three of the screws can be found along the bottom of the panel and the fourth next to the steering column.
  30.  
  31. Unfasten the four screws attaching the panel to the cowl, and then tilt the panel into the cab.
  32.  
  33. Unfasten the fuse block-to-panel screws.
  34.  
  35. Tag and unplug all wiring and vacuum connections. Feed the wires and vacuum hoses through the carrier opening.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the heater and/or A/C ducts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the panel and carrier from the vehicle.
  40.  

To install:
  1. Position the panel and carrier in the vehicle, and attach the heater and/or A/C ducts.
  2.  
  3. Feed the vacuum hoses and wires through the carrier opening, then attach the hoses and wiring.
  4.  
  5. Position the fuse block to the panel and install the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the panel-to-cowl screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower panel screws and tighten them to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Position the steering column onto its mounting studs and tighten the nuts.
  12.  
  13. Install the parking brake handle.
  14.  
  15. Install the cowl side panels and the door sill trim plates.
  16.  
  17. Istall the glove box and its retaining screws.
  18.  
  19. Place the glove box striker in position and install its retaining screws.
  20.  
  21. Install the defroster grille, the radio and the heater and/or A/C controls.
  22.  
  23. Install the instrument cluster and the panel accessory trim plate.
  24.  
  25. Attach the DLC to steering column filler panel.
  26.  
  27. Install the steering column filler panel.
  28.  
  29. Install the front speakers and the speaker grilles.
  30.  
  31. Place the courtesy lamp in position and tighten its retaining screws.
  32.  
  33. Position the lower sound insulator panels, install the retainers. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm) and the nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36.  

1994 Utility Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the accessory trim plate screws, then remove the accessory trim plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the glove box door strap, then remove the glove box hinge screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove box door frame.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the ashtray support screws, then remove the ashtray support.
  12.  
  13. Remove the glove box.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the radio bracket bushing nut, then remove the radio.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the speaker grille screws, then remove the speaker grilles.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the speaker retainers, then remove the front radio speakers.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the sound insulation panel screws, then remove the sound insulation panels.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the steering column filler screws, then remove the steering column filler.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the hood release cable.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the shift indicator cable from the column bowl.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the steering column support nuts, then lower the steering column.
  30.  
  31. Unfasten the switch plate trim screw, then remove the switch trim plate.
  32.  
  33. Disengage the electrical wiring harness from the rear defogger and the light switches.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the heater and A/C control.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the cluster housing bezel mounting nuts, then remove the bezel.
  38.  
  39. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle. Disconnect and allow to hang:

    The speedometer instrument panel electrical connector and the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector
     
    The courtesy lamps and the cruise control module
     
    The horn relay, multifunction alarm and the flasher assembly

  41. If necessary, remove the applicable computer control module.
  42.  
  43. Remove the instrument panel-to-cowl mounts:
    1. Unfasten the screws from under the panel.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel support.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the screws in the defroster outlets.
    6.  
    7. Remove the ductwork, dash plugs, wire looms, and heater cables attached to the panel.
    8.

  45. Disengage any electrical connections/wires routed through the instrument panel, then remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  46.  

To install:
  1. Install the instrument panel assembly to the cowl, carefully routing and connecting the electrical wires and cables.
  2.  
  3. Connect the instrument panel-to-cowl mounts:
    1. Connect the ductwork, dash plugs, wire looms, and heater cables to the instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Secure the screws in the defroster outlets.
    4.  
    5. Install the instrument panel support, then fasten the screws (located under the panel).
    6.

  5. Install the computer control module, if removed.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster. Reconnect and mount:

    The speedometer and VSS electrical connectors
     
    The flasher assembly, multifunction alarm, and horn relay
     
    The cruise control module and the courtesy lamps
     

  8.  
  9. Install the cluster housing bezel using the mounting nuts. Tighten the nuts to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the heater and A/C control.
  12.  
  13. Engage the rear defogger and light switch electrical harness.
  14.  
  15. Install the switch trim plate using the retaining screw. Tighten the screw to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Raise the steering column to the mounting bracket, then install the steering column support nuts.
  18.  
  19. Install the shift indicator column to the column bowl, making sure that the indicator is aligned.
  20.  
  21. Connect the hood release cable.
  22.  
  23. Install the steering column filler panel using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the sound insulation panels using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the front radio speakers and speaker retainers, then connect the speaker grilles using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the radio and tighten the fastener to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the glove compartment, then install the ashtray support using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the glove compartment door frame, door and door hinge screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the glove compartment door strap.
  36.  
  37. Install the accessory trim plate using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the ashtray, then connect the negative battery cable.
  40.

CAUTION
When performing service around the air bag system components or wiring, the air bag system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded air bag system repairs.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system. Please refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System in Chassis Electrical .
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws from the instrument cluster trim plate and remove the cluster trim plate from the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Unplug all electrical connectors, as necessary.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with a tilt steering column, move it to the down position.
  10.  
  11. Set the parking brake, block the wheels and place the automatic transmission in low, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the left instrument panel sound insulator.
  14.  
  15. Unplug the DLC connector.
  16.  
  17. Disengage the RKE/delay module.
  18.  
  19. Remove the center instrument panel sound insulator.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the parking brake release cable by squeezing the retainers.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the cable slug from the parking brake mechanism and remove the knee bolster.
  24.  
  25. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lighter and accessory power outlets, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Remove the courtesy lamp.
  30.  
  31. Remove the knee bolster from the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Remove the HVAC control assembly and set aside.
  34.  
  35. Remove the four radio screws, and through the storage compartment, reach behind the radio and unplug the antenna and three electrical connectors.
  36.  
  37. Using a 15 mm wrench, remove the four steering column screws.
  38.  
  39. Remove the following four lower instrument panel support bolts screws across the bottom of the instrument panel.
    1. Remove the left and right instrument panel pivot bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel lower support to brake pedal bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the instrument panel lower support bolt.
    6.

  41. Remove the instrument panel upper support bolts.
  42.  
  43. Remove both speaker grilles.
  44.  
  45. Using a flat bladed tool, remove windshield defrost grilles.
  46.  
  47. Unplug all electrical connectors, as necessary.
  48.  
  49. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  50.  

To install:
  1. Position the instrument panel to the vehicle and rest onto the lower pivot studs.
  2.  
  3. Engage all electrical connectors, as necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper instrument panel support screws, but do not tighten.
  6.  
  7. Install the right, center and left lower instrument panel support screws, but do not tighten.
  8.  
  9. Align the instrument panel for the lower screws.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper and lower support screws to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column nuts and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install both speaker grilles.
  16.  
  17. Install the radio and plug the antenna and three electrical connectors.
  18.  
  19. Install the HVAC control assembly and vacuum and electrical connections.
  20.  
  21. Install the instrument cluster trim plate and align with the knee bolster.
  22.  
  23. Instal the knee bolster to the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Install the courtesy lamp.
  26.  
  27. Install the lighter and accessory power outlets, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Install the parking brake cable.
  30.  
  31. Install the center instrument panel sound insulator.
  32.  
  33. Install the left instrument panel sound insulator.
  34.  
  35. Engage the RKE/delay module.
  36.  
  37. Plug in the DLC connector.
  38.  
  39. Install the nut to the accelerator stud and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the right instrument panel sound insulator.
  42.  
  43. Enable the air bag system. Please refer to Chassis Electrical .
  44.  
  45. Connect the negative battery cable.
  46.  

1997-99 Models

CAUTION
When performing service around the air bag system components or wiring, the air bag system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded air bag system repairs.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system. Please refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System in Chassis Electrical .
  4.  
  5. Set the parking brake and block the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the parking brake release cable from the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the screws that retain the Data Link Connector (DLC) instrument panel left side sound insulator. Feed the DLC through the hole in the sound insulator.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the right side sound insulator panel screws and remove the panel.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the screws that attach the instrument panel left side sound insulator to the knee bolster and cowl panel.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the nut that attaches the left side sound insulator to the accelerator pedal bracket.
  16.  
  17. Unplug the remote control door lock receiver module electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the door lock receiver module from the left side sound insulator. Remove the left side sound insulator.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the screws that attach the instrument panel center sound insulator to the knee bolster, instrument panel, heater assembly and floor duct.
  22.  
  23. Remove the center sound insulator.
  24.  
  25. Unfasten the screws that attach the courtesy lamp to the knee bolster.
  26.  
  27. Unfasten the screws that attach the knee bolster to the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the lap cooler duct from the knee bolster.
  30.  
  31. Unplug the lighter electrical connection and remove the knee bolster.
  32.  
  33. Unfasten the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts and lower the column.
  34.  
  35. Unfasten the screws that attach the instrument panel accessory trim plate to the instrument panel.
  36.  
  37. Remove the trim plate and unplug all necessary electrical connection.
  38.  
  39. Remove the heater and/or A/C control assembly.
  40.  
  41. Remove the radio and the storage compartment assembly (if equipped).
  42.  
  43. If necessary, remove the instrument cluster.
  44.  
  45. Unfasten the left and right instrument panel pivot bolts and the panel lower support bolt.
  46.  
  47. Unfasten the speaker grilles retaining screws and remove the speaker grilles.
  48.  
  49. Remove the windshield defroster grille using a flat-bladed prytool. Start at one end of the grille and work your way down the grille.
  50.  
  51. Unfasten the four instrument panel upper support screws.
  52.  
  53. Tag and unplug all necessary electrical connections.
  54.  
  55. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  56.  

To install:
  1. Rest the instrument panel on the lower pivot studs.
  2.  
  3. Attach the electrical connections.
  4.  
  5. Install but do not tighten the four upper instrument panel support screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the left and right panel pivot bolts. Tighten the bolts to 102 inch lbs. (11.5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the panel lower support bolt. Tighten the bolt to 102 inch lbs. (11.5 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the upper support screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the windshield defroster grille and the speaker grilles.
  14.  
  15. Install the radio and storage compartment assembly (if equipped).
  16.  
  17. If removed, install the instrument cluster.
  18.  
  19. Install the heater and/or A/C control assembly.
  20.  
  21. Attach the electrical connections to the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  22.  
  23. Place the trim plate in position and install its retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Place the steering column into position and install its retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Attach the lighter electrical connection and the lap cooler duct to the knee bolster.
  28.  
  29. Place the knee bolster into position and install its retaining screws. Tighten the Torx® head screws to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and the hex head screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Place the courtesy lamp in position and install its screws. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Place the instrument panel center sound insulator in position. Install the screws that attach the center sound insulator to the knee bolster, instrument panel and the floor duct. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the screw that attaches the center sound insulator to the heater assembly. Tighten the screw to 13 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the remote control door lock receiver module to the instrument panel left side sound insulator.
  38.  
  39. Attach the door lock receiver electrical connection.
  40.  
  41. Install the nut that attaches the left side sound insulator to the accelerator pedal bracket. Tighten the nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the screw that attaches the left side sound insulator to cowl panel. Tighten the screw to 13 inch lbs. (1.5 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install the screws that attach the left side sound insulator to knee bolster. Tighten the screw to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Feed the DLC through the hole in the sound insulator, place the DLC in position and install its retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 21 inch lbs. (2.4 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Install the right side sound insulator and tighten the screws
  50.  
  51. Connect the parking brake release cable to the lever.
  52.  
  53. Enable the air bag system. Please refer to Chassis Electrical .
  54.  
  55. Connect the negative battery cable.
  56.
