Fuel Rail

Removal & Installation



1998-99 Models
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If necessary, remove the intake manifold assembly.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the fuel injector electrical connections by pushing in the wire connector clip and gently pulling on the connector.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel feed inlet pipe from the rail. Refer to the quick connect fitting removal & installation procedure at the beginning of this section.
  8.  

Use a back-up wrench on the fuel rail return fitting to prevent it from turning.

  1. Disconnect the fuel return pipe from the fuel pressure regulator.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel pressure regulator.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the fuel rail attaching bolts and lift the fuel rail assembly from the cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Remove the fuel rail by moving the rail towards the front of the engine.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the fuel rail and insert it into the cylinder head. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator.
  4.  

Use a back-up wrench on the fuel rail return fitting to prevent it from turning.

  1. Connect the return pipe to the fuel pressure regulator. Tighten the fuel pipe nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Cnnect the fuel feed inlet pipe to rail. Refer to the quick connect fitting removal & installation procedure at the beginning of this section.
  4.  

Rotate the fuel injectors as necessary to avoid stretching the wire harness.

  1. Attach the injector electrical connections.
  2.  
  3. If removed, install the intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Inspect for leaks as follows:
    1. Turn the switch to the ON position for 2 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Turn the ignition switch OFF for 10 seconds.
    4.  
    5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check for leaks.
