Brake shoes should be inspected once a year or at 6000 miles (9600 km), whichever occurs first or every time the wheel is removed. Remove the drum and inspect the lining thickness of both brake shoes. The rear brake shoes should be replaced if the lining is less than 0.030 in. (0.76mm) thick above the rivet (so that the lining is thicker than the metal shoe backing in most cases) in order to prevent the rivet from scoring the drum. On bonded shoes the same specification should be used and the thickness of the bonded lining should be 0.030 in. (0.76mm) thick above the metal shoe backing plate. As with all brake service, keep in mind that local regulations take precedence over these specifications. Always check with your local authorities to be sure you are in compliance with local laws.
Brake shoes should always be replaced in sets.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

- Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
- Remove the rear wheels.
- Matchmark and remove the brake drums.
- Remove the shoe return springs and disconnect the actuator link (the link may be removed at this time), then remove the shoe guide from the stud at the top of the backing plate.
Special brake spring tools are available from the auto supply stores, which will ease the removal and installation of the return springs and the shoe hold-down spring and anchor pin.
- Remove the shoe hold-down springs and pins.
- Remove the actuator lever, pivot and return spring.
- If not done earlier, remove the actuator link.
- Remove the parking brake strut and strut spring, then remove the parking brake lever from the shoe (it may be easier to wait until the shoe is being removed to separate the lever).
- Remove the brake shoes, the adjuster screw assembly and the adjuster spring.
- Clean and inspect all of the brake parts.
- Check the wheel cylinders for seal condition and leaking.
- Inspect the axle seal for leakage and replace, if necessary.
- Inspect the replacement shoes for nicks or burrs, lightly lubricate the backing plate contact points, the brake cable, the levers and adjusting screws with a white lithium brake grease.
- Make sure that the right and left hand adjusting screws are not mixed. You can prevent this by working on one side at a time. This will also provide you with a reference for reassembly, just keep in mind that the assembly on one side of the vehicle is the mirror image of the assembly on the other side. The star wheel should be nearest to the secondary shoe when correctly installed.
- Install the adjusting screw assembly and spring to both shoes, then position the shoes to the backing plate.
- Install the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe.
- Install the strut spring to the parking brake strut, then position the strut.
- Install the actuator lever, lever pivot and the link. Install the lever return spring.
- Install the shoe hold-down pins and springs.
- Install the shoe guide over the stud at the top of the backing plate.
- Install the return springs.
- Lightly sandpaper the shoes to make sure they are clean, then align and install the drum.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
- Adjust the brakes as described in this section.
- Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle, then road test the vehicle.
