Lock Cylinder

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1994 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the turn signal switch from the column and allow it to hang from the wires (leaving them connected). For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the buzzer switch assembly.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the lock cylinder screw and the lock cylinder. If possible, use a magnetic tipped screwdriver on the screw in order to help prevent the possibility of dropping it.
  10.  


CAUTION
If the screw is dropped upon removal, it could fall into the steering column, requiring complete disassembly in order to retrieve the screw and prevent damage.

To install:
  1. Align and install the lock cylinder set.
  2.  
  3. Push the lock cylinder all the way in, then carefully install the retaining screw. Tighten the screw to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) on tilt columns or to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm) on standard non-tilt columns.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, install the buzzer switch assembly.
  6.  
  7. Reposition and secure the turn signal switch assembly
  8.  
  9. Align and install the steering wheel.
  10.  
  11. Make sure the ignition is OFF , then connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

1995-99 Vehicles

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  


CAUTION
These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Fuel System .

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System (SIR). Refer to Chassis Electrical of this repair guide for this procedure.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the steering column-to-instrument panel retainers and lower the column.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the pan head screws from the upper column shroud and the Torx head screws from the lower column screws, then remove lower shroud by tilting it down to disengage the locking tabs. Lift up the upper shroud to access the cylinder hole.
  8.  
  9. Hold the key in the START position.
  10.  
  11. Insert a 1 / 16 Allen wrench or an awl into the lock cylinder access hole and push down on the cylinder retaining pin.
  12.  
  13. Release the key to the RUN position and pull the lock cylinder from the column.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper shroud and lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Install the key in the cylinder and hold in it the RUN position.
    2.  
    3. Make sure the sector in the lock module is in the RUN position.
    4.  
    5. Engage the cylinder to the upper shroud, line up the locking tab and positioning tab with the slots in the lock module assembly, then push the cylinder into position.

  3. Install the upper shroud Torx head screws and tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the lower shroud, making sure the slots in the lower shroud engage the tabs on the upper shroud, then tilt the lower shroud up to snap the halves together. Install the lower shroud screws and tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Place the steering column into position and tighten the retainers.
  8.  
  9. Activate the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. For details, please refer to the procedure located in Chassis Electrical .
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
