SHIFT LINKAGE

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

The shift linkage should be adjusted so that transmission is in the proper gear when the selector is in the shift gate. The shift indicator position should not be relied on, instead, make sure the shifter properly engages each gate position when the transmission is shifted to each gear. After adjustment, check the back-up light/neutral safety switch adjustment to be sure the engine will only start when the transmission is in the Park or Neutral positions.

  1. Firmly apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  4.
  5. At the left-side of the transmission, loosen the shift rod swivel-to-equalizer lever nut or retaining bolt, as equipped.
  6.
  7. At the steering column, place the gear selector lever into the Neutral position.
  8.

When positioning the gear selector lever, DO NOT use the steering column indicator to find the Neutral position. Instead rely on the mechanical shift gate.

  1. Rotate the transmission shift lever counterclockwise (forward) to the 1st detent (Park) position, then turn it clockwise (rearward) to the 2nd detent (Neutral) position.
  2.
  3. Tightly, hold the shifting rod (swivel) in position, then torque the adjusting nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) or the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), as applicable.
  4.
  5. Place the gear selector lever (on the steering column) in the Park position and check the adjustment. Move the gear selector lever into the various positions; the engine must start in the Park and the Neutral positions.
  6.

If the engine will not start in the Neutral and/or Park positions (or will start in gear), refer toback-up light switch adjustment procedures inChapter 6of this manual, then properly adjust the switch.

CAUTION
With the gear selector lever in the Park position, the parking pawl should engage the rear internal gear lugs or output ring gear lugs to prevent the vehicle from rolling and possibly causing personal injury.

  1. Align the gear selector lever indicator, if necessary. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.

THROTTLE VALVE (TV) CABLE

See Figures 4 and 5

The non-electronically controlled transmissions covered by this manual utilize a throttle valve and TV cable. If the TV cable is broken, sticking, misadjusted or if an incorrect part is installed for the model, the vehicle may exhibit various malfunctions, such as: delayed or full throttle shifts.

Preliminary Checks
  1. Inspect and/or correct the transmission fluid level.
  2.
  3. Make sure that the brakes are not dragging and that the engine is operating correctly.
  4.
  5. Make sure that the cable is connected at both ends.
  6.
  7. Make sure that the correct cable is installed.
  8.

Adjustment
  1. If necessary for access, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.
  3. If the cable has been removed and installed, pull on the upper end of the cable. It should travel a short distance with light resistance caused by the small return spring on the TV lever. When released, check to see that the cable slider returns to the zero or the fully adjusted position; if not, adjust the cable and slider:
    1. Depress and hold the readjust tab on the end of the TV cable.
    2.
    3. Move the slider back on the cable (away from the throttle lever) until it stops against the fitting.
    4.
    5. Release the readjust tab.
    6.

  4.
  5. Rotate the throttle lever by hand (DO NOT use the accelerator pedal) to the full throttle stop (wide open throttle) position. The slider must move (ratchet) toward the lever in order to adjust the cable when the lever is rotated.
  6.
  7. Release the throttle lever and check for proper operation.
  8.

The throttle valve cable adjustment should be rechecked with the engine at normal operating temperature. A cable may appear to function properly while the engine is cold, but no work properly when warmed.
