GM S10/S15/Sonoma Pick-Ups 1982-1993 Repair Manual

Power Steering Pump

The power steering pump reservoir is located at the front left-side of the engine.

Use GM Power Steering Fluid No. 1050017 or equivalent. On some vehicles, access is difficult without using a flexible funnel.

Avoid using automatic transmission fluid in the power steering unit.

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

The power steering fluid should be checked at least every 6 months. There is a Cold and a Hot mark on the dipstick. To prevent possible overfilling, check the fluid level only when the fluid has warmed to operating temperatures and the engine is shut OFF . If necessary, add fluid to the power steering pump reservoir.

On models equipped with a remote reservoir, the fluid level should be1/2-1 in. (13-25mm) from the top when the wheels are turned to the extreme left position.
