Speedometer Cable

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Some early model vehicles are equipped with a speedometer cable. Later vehicles utilize a vehicle speed sensor to electronically deliver speed information to the computer control unit and the speedometer.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster for access to the cable. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. From the rear of the instrument cluster, remove the speedometer cable-to-head fitting.
  6.  
  7. If replacing ONLY the speedometer cable core, perform the following procedures:
    1. Disconnect the speedometer casing from the speedometer head.
    2.  
    3. Pull the speedometer cable core from the speedometer casing.
    4.  
    5. Using a graphite-based lubricant, lubricate a new speedometer cable and install the cable into the casing.

  9. If replacing the speedometer cable assembly, perform the following procedures:
    1. Disconnect the speedometer casing from the speedometer head.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the speedometer casing from the transmission.
    4.  
    5. Remove the various speedometer cable/casing retaining clips.
    6.  
    7. Remove the speedometer cable/casing assembly from the vehicle.

  11. To install the speedometer cable, reverse the removal procedures.
