REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1 and 2

The following procedure requires the use of two sets of jackstands.

  1. Raise and support the rear frame of the vehicle safely using jackstands. Support the rear axle with the second set of jackstands.
  2.  

When supporting the rear of the vehicle, support the axle and the body separately in order to relieve the load on the rear spring.

  1. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. For vehicles through 1988:
    1. At the rear of the spring, loosen (but DO NOT remove) the shackle-to-frame bolt and the shackle-to-spring bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut and bolt from the front hanger, then carefully disconnect the spring from the hanger.
    4.  
    5. Support the spring, then remove the shackle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the U-bolts and anchor plate.

  7. For 1989-93 vehicles:
    1. Remove the U-bolt nuts, washers, anchor plate and bolts.
    2.  
    3. On 1993 vehicles, remove the spare tire, if equipped.
    4.  
    5. Remove the shackle-to-frame bolt, washers and nut.
    6.  
    7. For 1993 vehicles, remove the fuel tank, if necessary. For details, please refer to Chapter 5 of this manual.

    9. Remove the front bracket nut, washers and bolt.

  1. Carefully remove the spring from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. If necessary on 1989 and later vehicles, remove the shackle-to-spring nut, washers and bolts, then remove the shackle from the spring.
  4.  

To install:
  1. If removed on 1989 and later vehicles, install the shackle to the rearward spring eye using the bolt, washers and nut, but do not fully tighten at this time.
  2.  
  3. Position the spring assembly to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. For 1989-93 vehicles:
    1. Install the spring to the front bracket using the retaining bolt, washers and nut, but do not fully tighten at this time.
    2.  
    3. If removed, install the fuel tank.
    4.  
    5. Install the shackle-to-frame bolt, washers and nut, but do not fully tighten at this time. If used, remove the spring support.
    6.  
    7. Install the U-bolts, anchor plate, washers and U-bolt nuts. Tighten the U-bolt nuts using 2 passes of a diagonal sequence. First tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), then tighten them to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).

  1. For vehicles through 1988:
    1. Install the anchor plate and U-bolts.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the U-bolts using 2 passes of a diagonal sequence. First tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), then tighten them to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Loosely install the shackle-to-spring fasteners.
    6.  
    7. Loosely install the spring to the front hanger.
    8.

  3. Position the axle to achieve an approximate gap of 6.46-6.94 in. (164-176mm) between the axle housing tube and the metal surface of the rubber frame bumper bracket. Measure from the housing between the U-bolts to the metal part of the rubber bump stop on the frame.
  4.  
  5. While supporting the axle in this position, torque the front and rear spring mounting fasteners to 88 ft. lbs. (120 Nm) for vehicles through 1988 or to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm) for 1989-93 vehicles.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
