A transmission serial number is stamped on each transmission case or to a plate which is welded to the case. Location of the ID number will vary with the transmission manufacturer. On many of the transmissions covered by this manual the ID number is located on a metal plate which is attached to the extension housing case bolt, on the left-side. Some later model vehicles, such as those equipped with the Borg Warner T-5 transmission locate the transmission ID number on the front right of the housing.

The identification number for the 180C is located on a metal tag attached to the left-front of the transmission case.
The identification numbers for the 200C (3-spd) are stamped on the right rear-side of the transmission case, behind the modulator on the left rear of the case and on the right front of the case, on or near the bellhousing.
The identification number for the 700-R4 is stamped on the right or left rear-side of the transmission pan rail.
The identification number for the 4L60 and 4L60-E is stamped on the right rear of the housing just above the pan rail.
