Back-up Light Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

For removal and installation of the back-up light switch, refer to the procedures under NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, in this section.

Storm
KF400 TRANSAXLE
  1. Disconnect the negative and the positive battery cables.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nut, bolt and the battery hold down bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the back-up switch electrical connector. It is below the right side of the battery tray.
  8.  
  9. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  10.  
  11. Remove the six screws and the left splash shield from the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Turn the back-up switch counterclockwise to remove it from the transaxle.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Apply Loctite® pipe sealant or the equivalent, to the switch threads, and turn the switch clockwise to install it into the transaxle. Tighten it to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the left splash shield to the vehicle and tighten the six screws.
  4.  
  5. Safely lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the back-up switch electrical connector to the switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the battery and the battery hold down bracket. Tighten the bolt to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm) and the nut to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the positive battery cable and tighten the terminal retainer to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

JF403E TRANSAXLE
  1. Engage the parking brake and block the wheels. Place the manual selector in the N position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the intake air duct from the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the air breather tub from the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Separate the air cleaner assembly halves.
  10.  
  11. Remove the three bolts and loosen the left half of the air cleaner assembly from the left front strut tower.
  12.  
  13. Remove one retaining clip and disconnect the wire harness from the left half of the air cleaner assembly. Remove the air cleaner from the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the inhibitor switch electrical connectors from the back-up/inhibitor switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the manual shift shaft nut from the manual shift shaft.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the transaxle shift lever with the shift select cable from the manual shift shaft.
  20.  
  21. Remove the three bolts and the inhibitor switch from the transaxle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the inhibitor switch to the transaxle aligning the manual shift shaft lever pin with the slot provided in the inhibitor switch lever; securing with three bolts, but do not tighten fully.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the manual shift shaft lever clockwise until the manual shift shaft is in the N position.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the inhibitor switch using a standard drift punch. With the punch place through the hole in the manual shift shaft lever, align the manual shift shaft lever with the alignment cavity in the inhibitor switch.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the inhibitor switch mounting bolts to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the transaxle shift lever with the shift select cable onto the manual shift shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the manual shift shaft nut onto the manual shift shaft and tighten it to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the inhibitor switch electrical connectors to the inhibitor switch.
  14.  
  15. Install the left half of the air cleaner assembly into the vehicle. Install the wiring harness to the left half of the air cleaner assembly and tighten the three bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Pair the air cleaner assembly halves.
  18.  
  19. Connect the air breather tube to the air cleaner assembly.
  20.  
  21. Connect the intake air duct to the air cleaner assembly.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.
