REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Storm
  1. Disconnect the battery cables, then remove the battery and tray from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the intake air duct and breather tube from the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors, shift cable, shift cable bracket, breather hose and speedometer cable from the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the vacuum diaphragm hose from the vacuum diaphragm, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Install engine support tool J-28467-A or equivalent, then remove the left transaxle through bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove 4 transaxle-to-engine attaching bolts, then raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right and left undercovers, then the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the left control arm from the steering knuckle, then drain the transaxle fluid.
  16.  
  17. Remove the halfshafts and suspend on a wire.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt, then the dampener from the rear mount through bolt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rear transaxle mount through bolt, then the 2 front center crossmember mounting bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front exhaust pipe-to-exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then 2 rear front pipe bolts. Disconnect the front pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 2 rear center crossmember mounting bolts, then the crossmember from the vehicle. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Lower the engine slightly using engine support tool J-28467 or equivalent. Do not remove the engine support.
  28.  
  29. Raise and safely support the vehicle, then position a suitable jack under the transaxle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear mount to transaxle case bolt, the front mount attaching bolt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front mounting bracket attaching bolts, then the front mounting bracket from the engine.
  34.  
  35. Remove the flywheel cover, then the flywheel-to-torque converter attaching bolts.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the transaxle, then remove the 2 rear transaxle mount bolts. Lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
  38.  

To install:
  1. Raise the transaxle into position, then install the 2 rear transaxle mounting bolts. Remove transaxle jack.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle, then install the 4 transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Using engine support tool J-28467-A or equivalent, raise the engine slightly.
  6.  
  7. Install the through bolt on the left transaxle mount. Torque through bolt to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle, then install the flywheel-to-torque converter attaching bolts. Torque converter bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the flywheel cover, then connect the oil cooler lines to the transaxle. Torque oil cooler line trunnion bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the front transaxle mount nut and bolt. Torque bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear mount through bolt. Torque rear transaxle mount attaching bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and the rear mount through bolt to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the center crossmember. Torque crossmember bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the front mount through bolt. Torque bolt to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the dampener on the rear mount through bolt.
  22.  
  23. Install the front pipe to the exhaust manifold and secure in place.
  24.  
  25. Install the halfshafts into the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Install the left control arm onto the steering knuckle, then the right and left under covers.
  28.  
  29. Install the tire and wheel assemblies, then lower the vehicle. Torque the engine-to-transaxle attaching bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Remove the engine support tool, then install the speedometer to the transaxle.
  32.  
  33. Install the breather hose, shaft cable bracket and shift cable to the transaxle.
  34.  
  35. Install the vacuum hose to the vacuum diaphragm, if equipped.
  36.  
  37. Connect the electrical connectors to the transaxle.
  38.  
  39. Install the air breather tube and the air intake duct onto the air cleaner assembly.
  40.  
  41. Install the battery and battery tray. Connect the battery cables and check transaxle fluid. Start engine and check for leaks.
  42.  

Spectrum
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air duct tube from the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. From the transaxle, disconnect the shift cable, speedometer cable, vacuum diaphragm hose, engine wiring harness clamp and the ground cable.
  6.  
  7. At the left-fender, disconnect the inhibitor switch and the kickdown solenoid wiring connectors.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the transaxle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 3 upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.  
  13. Remove both front-wheels and the left-front fender splash shield.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect both tie rod ends at the steering knuckles.
  16.  
  17. Remove both front tension rod brackets and disconnect the rods from the control arms.
  18.  
  19. Disengage the halfshafts from the transaxle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the flywheel dust cover and the converter-to-flywheel attaching bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the transaxle rear mount through bolt.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the starter wiring and the starter. Support the transaxle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts and remove the transaxle.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Install transaxle to engine. Torque the converter-to-flywheel bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm), and the transaxle-to-engine bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the flywheel dust cover.
  4.  
  5. Install both halfshafts into the transaxle.
  6.  
  7. Install the tension rod brackets and both tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the splash shield to the left front fender. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  10.  
  11. Connect the transaxle cooler lines.
  12.  
  13. Connect all electrical connectors and hoses that were disconnected during the removal.
  14.  
  15. Connect the speedometer cable and shift cable to the transaxle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the battery negative cable, adjust the shift linkage and fill the transaxle with Dexron® II automatic transaxle fluid. Start engine and check for leaks.
