Fig. Fig. 1: Brake light switch

  1. Locate the brake light switch on the brake pedal bracket assembly.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connection for the brake light switch.
  4.
  5. Remove the locknut and the brake light switch.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install brake light switch on brake pedal bracket and adjust to specification.
  2.
  3. Tighten the locknut.
  4.
  5. Install the connector and the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Check the operation of the brake light switch. With the engine OFF, depress the brake pedal and check that the brake lights come ON. With the brake pedal released, make sure the brake lights are OFF.
  8.
  9. If operation is not as described above, repeat adjustment of the brake light switch.
  10.

The brake light switch is almost always the first place to look for the cause of the brake lights flickering over bumps or staying on without use of the brakes. If the brake lights fail to work with the brakes applied, check all fuses then check adjustment of the brake light switch.

ADJUSTMENT

  1. Loosen locknuts on brake light switch.
  2.
  3. Adjust the brake light switch so the clearance between the brake light switch housing (not plunger) and brake pedal is 0.02-0.04 in. (0.5-1.0mm). In this position, the plunger will be retracted inside the brake light switch housing.
  4.
  5. Tighten locknuts to secure switch in position. Connect the electrical connector, if removed.
  6.
  7. With the engine OFF, depress the brake pedal and check that the brake lights come ON. With the brake pedal released, make sure the brake lights are OFF.
