REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except 1.8L Engine

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable and drain cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the top radiator hose from the thermostat housing outlet pipe.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outlet pipe bolts, outlet pipe, gasket and thermostat from the thermostat housing.
  6.  
  7. Reverse procedure to install and tighten the housing bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Refill cooling system and connect battery negative cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.

1.8L Engine

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain the engine cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition wire from the distributor coil, then remove the distributor cap from the engine for access to the thermostat housing located below the distributor.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the clamp screws, then remove the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing cap.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the EGR pipe nut at the intake manifold, then remove the EGR pipe bracket from the thermostat housing. Remove the 2 retaining bolts, then remove the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the clamp, then separate the upper radiator house from the thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 short and 1 long thermostat housing cap bolts, then remove the cap and gasket from the housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thermostat from the housing.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Position a new cap gasket, then install the cap and tighten the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing and secure using a hose clamp.
  6.  
  7. Secure the EGR pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Tighten the EGR pipe-to-intake manifold pipe nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Connect the EGR pipe bracket to the thermostat housing.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat cap and secure using a hose clamp.
  10.  
  11. Install the distributor cap and secure with the cap screws. Connect the ignition wire to the coil.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.
