REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Spectrum

See Figure 1

The Spectrum timing cover may be removed with the engine installed in order to inspect the drive belt, camshaft pulley, timing belt tension pulley and the water pump. If the timing belt or the crankshaft timing pulley must be removed, then engine must first be pulled from the vehicle. Refer to the timing belt procedure later in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 4 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke and the crankshaft timing mark aligns with the 0 mark on the timing cover toothed gauge. This step must be performed if the timing belt or any of the timing pulleys are to be removed from the engine.
  4.
  5. Support the engine, then remove the front mount bracket attached to the front cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the retaining bolts, then remove the timing cover from the engine.
  8.

To install:
  1. Install the timing cover to the engine and tighten the bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the engine mount bracket and tighten the fasteners to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.

Storm
SOHC ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the alternator belt, then the power steering belt.
  4.
  5. Support the engine using J-28467-A or an equivalent engine support fixture.
  6.
  7. Remove the right engine mount.
  8.
  9. Remove the timing belt cover retaining bolts, then the timing belt cover from the vehicle. It may be necessary to support the vehicle and remove the right under cover in order to access the lower timing cover bolts.
  10.
  11. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten the cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Connect the battery negative cable.
  12.

DOHC ENGINE

See Figure 1

Unlike the other Storm engine, the DOHC engines utilize a 2-piece timing cover consisting of an upper and a lower assembly.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.
  3. Support the engine using J-28467-A or an equivalent engine support fixture.
  4.
  5. Remove the right engine mount, by first removing the bracket bolt and nut, then removing the mount through-bolt.
  6.
  7. Remove the alternator and power steering belts (1.6L engine) or the serpentine drive belt (1.8L engine). If necessary, remove the retaining bolt and relocate the wiring harness from the timing belt upper cover.
  8.
  9. Remove the upper timing belt cover attaching screws, then remove the upper timing belt cover from the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  14.
  15. Remove the retaining bolts and the lower timing belt cover.
  16.
  17. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten the lower and upper cover retaining bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Connect the battery negative cable.
