REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Spectrum
CAMSHAFT/TENSION PULLEYS

See Figures 1 and 2

Unlike the Spectrum crankshaft timing pulley, both the camshaft and tension pulleys may be removed with the engine installed in the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing belt cover; refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Make sure the timing mark on the camshaft pulley is aligned with the upper surface of the cylinder head and that the camshaft dowel pin is positioned to the top of the gear.
  6.
  7. Loosen the camshaft pulley retaining bolts.
  8.
  9. Loosen the timing belt tension pulley and allow the belt to hang.
  10.
  11. Remove the camshaft timing pulley and/or the tension pulley.
  12.

To install:
  1. If removed, install the tension pulley assembly and tighten the retaining bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  2.
  3. If removed, install the camshaft pulley and tighten the retaining bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Make sure the timing marks are aligned, then turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump. The marks camshaft marks should still be properly aligned.
  6.
  7. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
  8.
  9. Check the timing belt tension using a belt tension gauge, it should be 40-48 lbs. (18-22 Kg).
  10.
  11. Install the timing belt cover.
  12.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.

CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the engine assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  6.
  7. Remove the crankshaft timing pulley from the end of the crankshaft. If necessary use a puller, but be sure that the puller will not damage the crankshaft or the gear.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the Woodruff key in the crankshaft followed by the crankshaft timing gear. Align the groove on the timing gear with the mark on the oil pump.
  2.
  3. Install the timing belt to the engine.
  4.
  5. Install the engine assembly.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

CAMSHAFT/TENSION PULLEYS

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing cover. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts and remove the pulley from the engine. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  6.
  7. Turn the engine to the No. 4 cylinder TDC position by aligning the crankshaft timing pulley groove and keyway with the oil pump timing mark.
  8.
  9. Loosen the tension pulley lock bolt, then loosen the timing belt by turning the tension pulley clockwise.
  10.
  11. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft pulley.
  12.
  13. Remove the camshaft pulley retaining bolts and remove the pulley from the engine. If necessary, remove the tensioner pulley retaining bolt and remove the tensioner assembly.
  14.

To install:
  1. If removed, loosely install the tension pulley assembly.
  2.
  3. Install the camshaft pulley, making sure to align the timing marks, then install the retaining bolts and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Position the timing belt over the pulleys and adjust to the proper tension.
    1. Turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions and realign the crankshaft timing gear groove with the mark on the oil pump.
    2.
    3. Loosen the tension pulley bolt and apply tension to the belt using an Allen wrench in the hexagonal pulley hole. Torque the pulley bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) while holding the pulley stationary.
    4.
    5. Check the timing belt tension/deflection using a belt tension gauge. The belt should deflect 0.63-0.79 in. (16-20mm) when 22 lbs. (98 N) of pressure is applied to the center of the longest belt stretch.
    6.

  6.
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  8.
  9. Install the timing cover.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing belt. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Remove the crankshaft timing pulley from the end of the crankshaft. If necessary use a puller, but be sure that the puller will not damage the crankshaft or the gear.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the Woodruff key in the crankshaft followed by the crankshaft timing gear. Align the groove on the timing gear with the mark on the oil pump.
  2.
  3. Install the timing belt to the engine.
  4.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.

CAMSHAFT PULLEYS

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the camshaft cover from the cylinder head. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft until the No. 1 cylinder is at the TDC position which will be achieved when the camshaft pulleys' timing marks are aligned, facing each other. Refer to the illustration shown earlier in this section.
  6.
  7. Remove the tension adjusting hole cover, then loosen the tension pulley lock bolt and loosen the timing belt by turning the tension pulley clockwise. If the engine is not equipped with a tension adjusting hole cover, the timing cover must be removed for access to the tension pulley bolt.
  8.
  9. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft pulleys.
  10.
  11. Remove the camshaft pulley retaining bolts, then remove the pulleys from the ends of the camshafts.
