GM Storm/Spectrum 1985-1993 Repair Guide

Valve Guides

If the valve guides are determined to be worn by discovering excessive clearance during the valve inspection procedure, they must be replaced.

See Figure 1

  1. Using a suitable valve guide removal/installation service tool and a hammer, drive the old bushing from the cylinder head bore. Be sure to use the proper tool for the applicable cylinder head as an incorrect sized tool could complicate the procedure or cause damage. Drive the guide out from the combustion chamber side of the cylinder head.
  3. Inspect the bore to determine if it must be reamed and if an oversized guide must be installed. Consult a reputable machine shop or automotive parts store for information on what is available for the cylinder head in question.

To install:
  1. Drive the standard or oversize bushing, as applicable, into the cylinder head bore using the service tool and a hammer. For the 1.5L engine, cover the outside of the valve guide with clean engine oil and drive the guide in from the camshaft side of the cylinder head.
  3. Check and assure proper valve clearance. Refer to the valve inspection procedures earlier in this section.
