REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Spectrum

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.
  3. Disconnect the PCV hoses, then remove the spark plug wires from the retaining clip or the clip from the valve cover.
  4.
  5. Remove the ground wire from the end of the valve cover, near the oil fill.
  6.
  7. Remove the right side engine mounting rubber and support the engine.
  8.
  9. Remove the bolts and plate from the side of the engine. Remove the bolt and mounting rubber.
  10.
  11. Remove the bracket on the timing cover, then remove the 4 bolts securing the timing cover.
  12.
  13. Remove the 2 valve cover bolts.
  14.
  15. Loosen the timing cover and remove the valve cover from the cylinder head. If the cover is difficult to remove, loosen it with blows from a rubber mallet to the end of the cover; this should shear it free. A small blunt prytool may also be used to free the cover, but be very careful not to distort the sealing flange.
  16.

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces, making sure that all sealant, gasket material and oils have been completely removed.
  2.
  3. Apply a coat of TB-1207B, or an equivalent sealant, to the cylinder head mating surface, then apply a thin bead to the arched areas of the No. 1 and No. 5 rocker brackets, as shown in the illustration.
  4.
  5. Loosen the timing cover sufficiently, then position the valve cover to the cylinder head. Install and tighten the valve cover bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.
  7. Make sure the timing cover is properly positioned, then install and tighten the retaining bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the right side engine mount bracket to the timing cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm), then install the mounting rubber.
  10.
  11. Install the ground wire, the spark plug wires/clip and the connect the PCV hoses.
  12.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

Storm

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the PCV hoses from the valve cover. For the 1.6L DOHC engine, remove the accelerator cable from the 2 cylinder head clips.
  4.
  5. Remove the spark plug wires from the clips for the SOHC engine or remove the center cover, then tag and disconnect the spark plug wires (from the plugs and clips) for the 1.6L DOHC engine.
  6.
  7. For the 1.8L engine, remove the 6 retaining screws and the spark plug cover, the tag and disconnect the wires from the spark plugs.
  8.
  9. For the 1.8L engine, remove the retaining bolt, then reposition the engine wiring harness conduit from the timing belt cover.
  10.
  11. Remove the 2 top (SOHC engine) or 3 top (1.8L engine) bolts securing the timing cover. For the SOHC engine, loosen but do not remove the lower bolt from the timing cover.
  12.
  13. Remove the 2 valve cover (SOHC engine) or 12 valve cover (DOHC engines) bolts, then remove the valve cover from the cylinder head. If the cover is difficult to remove, use blows from a rubber mallet on the end of the cover the shear the sealing material and loosen the cover. If the cover must be pried free, be very careful not to damage the sealing surfaces.
  14.

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces, making sure that all sealant, gasket material and oils have been completely removed.
  2.
  3. Apply a thin bead of GM 1052917, or an equivalent sealant, to the arched areas of the No. 1 and No. 5 camshaft bearing caps.
  4.
  5. Install the valve cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 89 inch lbs for the SOHC and 1.8L engines or to 29 inch lbs (3 Nm) for the 1.6L DOHC engine.
  6.
  7. If removed, install and/or tighten the timing cover bolts to 89 inch lbs.
  8.
  9. For the 1.8L engine, reposition the wiring harness conduit to the timing belt cover and tighten the retaining bolt to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  10.
  11. If removed, connect the spark plug wires to the plugs.
  12.
  13. Fasten the spark plug wires in the retaining clips.
  14.
  15. For DOHC engines, install the spark plug or center cover.
  16.
  17. For the 1.6L DOHC engine, install the accelerator cable in the clips.
  18.
  19. Connect the PCV hoses.
  20.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.
