Clean the halfshaft threads and lubricate them with a thread lubricant.

  1. Remove the hub nut and washer. On the Spectrum, disconnect the brake flex hose from the caliper.
  2.
  3. Remove the caliper-to-steering knuckle bolts and support the caliper, on a wire, out of the way.
  4.
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6.
  7. Inspect the hub bearing end-play prior to removal of the hub, as follows:
    1. Mount a dial indicator with magnetic base to the strut assembly.
    2.
    3. Position the indicator so that when the hub assembly is moved in and out, the end-play will be measured.
    4.
    5. Move the hub in and out while noting the deflection of the indicator.
    6.
    7. If the end-play exceeds 0.0020 in. (0.05mm), replacement of the hub bearing assembly will be required.
    8.

  8.
  9. Using a slide hammer puller and the puller attachment tool J-34866 or equivalent, pull the hub from the halfshaft.
  10.
  11. Remove the tie rod-to-steering knuckle cotter pin and the nut. Using the ball joint separator tool J-21687-02 or equivalent, press the tie rod ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  12.
  13. To remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle, perform the following procedures:
    1. Remove the lower ball joint-to-control arm nuts/bolts.
    2.
    3. Remove the steering knuckle-to-strut nuts/bolts and the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
    4.

  14.

Before separating the steering knuckle from the strut, be sure to scribe matchmarks on each component.

  1. Using a medium prybar, pry the grease seals from the steering knuckle. Using a pair of internal snapring pliers, remove the internal snaprings from the steering knuckle.
  2.
  3. Support the steering knuckle (face down) on an arbor press (on 2 press blocks). Position tool J-35301 (on Spectrum), J-22912-01 (on Storm) or equivalent, on the rear-side of the hub bearing, then, press the bearing from the steering knuckle.
  4.
  5. Using an arbor press, the wheel puller tool and a piece of bar stock, press the bearing inner race from the wheel hub.
  6.
  7. Clean the parts in solvent and blow dry with compressed air.
  8.

To install:
  1. Using wheel bearing grease, lubricate the inside of the steering knuckle.
  2.
  3. Using the internal snapring pliers, install the outer snapring into the steering knuckle.
  4.
  5. Position the steering knuckle on a arbor press (outer face down), a new wheel bearing and the bearing installation tool J-35301 (on the Spectrum), J-38284 (on the Storm) or equivalent, then press the bearing inward until it stops against the snapring.
  6.
  7. Using the internal snapring pliers, install the inner snapring into the steering knuckle.
  8.
  9. Using the grease seal installation tool J-35303 (on the Spectrum), outer oil seal installer J-38287 (on Storm), inner oil seal installer J-38285 (on the Storm) or equivalents, drive new grease seals into both ends of the steering knuckle until they seat against the snaprings.
  10.
  11. To install the hub into the steering knuckle, perform the following procedure:
    1. Position tool J-35302 (on the Spectrum), J-38287 (on the Storm) or equivalent, facing upward on a arbor press.
    2.
    3. Position the steering knuckle (facing upward) on the tool J-35302, the wheel hub and a piece of bar stock (on top).
    4.
    5. Press the assembly together until the hub bottoms out on the wheel bearing. Lubricate the new bearing seal with wheel bearing grease and install.
    6.

  12.
  13. To install steering knuckle to the vehicle, perform the following procedures:
    1. Install the steering knuckle and tighten the steering knuckle-to-strut nuts/bolts. On Spectrum, torque the steering knuckle-to-strut bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm). On Storm, torque steering knuckle nuts and bolts to 115 ft. lbs. (156 Nm).
    2.
    3. Install the lower ball joint-to-control arm nuts/bolts. On the Spectrum tighten the ball joint-to-control arm nuts/bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm). On Storm, tighten ball joint pinch bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (66 Nm).
    4.

  14.
  15. Press the tie rod ball joint to the steering knuckle. Install a new tie rod-to-steering knuckle cotter pin and tighten the nut on the Storm to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm),
  16.

Clean the halfshaft threads and lubricate them with a thread lubricant.

  1. Install the hub to the halfshaft.
  2.
  3. Install the brake rotor.
  4.
  5. Install the caliper. On the Spectrum, tighten the caliper-to-steering knuckle bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and connect the brake flex hose to the caliper. On the Storm, tighten the brake caliper-to-steering knuckle bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)
  6.
  7. Install the hub nut and washer and tighten the hub nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm).
  8.
  9. Grease the hub, install the hub grease caps and cotter pins. Install the front wheel assemblies.
  10.
  11. Lower the vehicle. Bleed the brakes as necessary.
  12.
  13. Check and/or adjust the front end alignment.
  14.
