Brake Shoes

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Spectrum
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drums.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake return spring and auto adjuster spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the leading shoe holding pin and spring and the leading shoe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the self adjuster and the adjuster lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the trailing shoe holding pin and spring.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the trailing shoe and remove the trailing shoe. Remove the parking brake lever from the trailing shoe.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Check all brake hardware-replace if necessary. Check the brake drum for scoring or other wear and machine or replace as necessary. Check the maximum brake drum diameter specification when machining. If the drum is machined, the wheel bearings must be removed and the hub thoroughly cleaned before installation.
  2.  
  3. Apply a thin coat of suitable high temperature grease to the shoe contact pads (and brake contact points) on the brake backing plate prior to installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the parking brake lever to the trailing shoe.
  6.  
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever.
  8.  
  9. Install trailing shoe with shoe holding pin and holding spring.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake adjuster.
  12.  
  13. Install leading shoe with shoe holding pin and holding spring.
  14.  
  15. Install automatic adjuster lever and automatic adjuster spring.
  16.  
  17. Install return spring.
  18.  
  19. Check the clearance between the brake shoes and the drum.
  20.  
  21. Install brake drum and adjust preload. Install the rear wheel.
  22.  
  23. Bleed the brake system. Adjust the parking brake. Road test the vehicle.
  24.  

Storm
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Remove the return spring, retainers, hold-down springs and pins.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjuster spring, then the shoes and adjuster.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Inspect brake drums, shoes adjuster, auto adjuster lever, springs and backing plate for wear, distortion, cracks or other abnormal condition. Replace as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install brake shoes and adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Install adjuster lever spring.
  6.  
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Install pins, hold down springs and retainers.
  10.  
  11. Install return springs.
  12.  
  13. Adjust brake shoes. Install drum.
  14.  
  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  16.  
  17. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.
