Removal & Installation



3.7L & 4.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at Bottom Dead Center (BDC) and both valves are closed.
  6.  
  7. Use special tool 8516 to depress the valve and remove the rocker arm.
  8.  
  9. Repeat for each rocker arm to be serviced.
    NOTE
    Keep valvetrain components in order for reassembly.

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft so that the piston of the cylinder to be serviced is at BDC.
  2.  
  3. Compress the valve spring and install each rocker arm in its original position.
  4.  
  5. Repeat for each rocker arm to be installed.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  

5.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Cylinder head cover
     

  4.  
  5. Loosen the rocker shaft bolts as follows: center, center left, center right, left, right.
    NOTE
    The rocker shaft assemblies are not interchangeable. The intake side is marked -I- . The shorter pushrods are used on the intake side.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    WARNING
    Do not rotate the crankshaft during or immediately after rocker shaft installation. Allow the roller tappets to leak down for about 5 minutes.



    Pushrods
     
    Rocker shaft assemblies. Torque the shafts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) in this sequence: center, center right, center left, right, left.
     



    Cylinder head covers.
