Removal & Installation



3.7L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect injector connectors and unclip the injector harness.
  8.  
  9. Route injector harness in front of valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the left side breather tube and remove the breather tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the valve cover mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove valve cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the valve covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean valve cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Tighten valve cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install left side breather and connect breather tube.
  6.  
  7. Connect injector electrical connectors and injector harness retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Install the resonator and air inlet hose.
  10.  
  11. Connect negative cable to battery.
  12.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  6.  
  7. Drain cooling system, below the level of the heater hoses.
  8.  
  9. Remove accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove air conditioning compressor retaining bolts and move compressor to the left.
  12.  
  13. Remove heater hoses.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect injector and ignition coil connectors.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect and remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  18.  
  19. Remove oil fill tube.
  20.  
  21. Unclip injector and ignition coil harness and move away from valve cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove valve cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, providing no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the valve covers. Severe damage to covers may occur.

  1. Clean valve cover and both sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
  2.  
  3. Tighten valve cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect injector, ignition coil electrical connectors and harness retaining clips.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil fill tube.
  10.  
  11. Install PCV hose.
  12.  
  13. Install heater hoses.
  14.  
  15. Install air conditioning compressor retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install accessory drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Fill Cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Install air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  22.  
  23. Connect battery negative cable.
  24.  

4.7L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect injector connectors and unclip the injector harness.
  8.  
  9. Route injector harness in front of valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the left side breather tube and remove the breather tube.
  12.  
  13. Remove the valve cover mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove valve cover and gasket.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, provided no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

To install:

  3. Install valve cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all studs are in the correct location.
  4.  
  5. Tighten valve cover bolts and double ended studs to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install left side breather and connect breather tube.
  8.  
  9. Connect injector electrical connectors and injector harness retaining clips.
  10.  
  11. Install the resonator and air inlet hose.
  12.  
  13. Connect negative cable to battery.
  14.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove air cleaner assembly, resonator assembly and air inlet hose.
  6.  
  7. Drain cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Remove accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove air conditioning compressor retaining bolts and move compressor to the left.
  12.  
  13. Remove heater hoses.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect injector and ignition coil connectors.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect and remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  18.  
  19. Remove oil fill tube.
  20.  
  21. Unclip injector and ignition coil harness and move away from valve cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove right rear breather tube and filter assembly.
  24.

  25. Connect battery negative cable.

5.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect PCV hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect coil and spark plug connectors. Remove the coils.
    WARNING
    The ground straps must be installed in the same location as removed. The covers are machined to accept the ground straps in those locations only.

  9. Remove valve cover retaining bolts and ground straps.
  10.  
  11. Remove valve cover.

To install:


WARNING
Do not use harsh cleaners to clean the valve covers, as severe damage to covers may occur. Do not allow other components, including the wire harness, to rest on or against the valve cover as prolonged contact with other objects may wear a hole in the cylinder head cover.

  1. Clean valve cover and cylinder head sealing surfaces. Inspect and replace gasket as necessary.
    NOTE
    The gasket may be used again, provided no cuts, tears, or deformations have occurred.

  2.  
  3. Install valve cover and hand start all fasteners. Verify that all double-ended studs are in the correct location and install left and right ground straps. The right hand ground strap is located on the front inboard stud. The left hand ground strap is located on the rear inboard stud.
  4.  
  5. Tighten cylinder head cover bolts and double ended studs to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm). Begin torque sequence in the middle of head cover and torque bolts moving outward in a crisscross pattern from top to bottom.

  7. Install ignition coil on plug.
  8.  
  9. Connect ignition coil and spark plug connectors on 2005 models.
  10.  
  11. Install PCV hose.
  12.  
  13. Connect battery negative cable.
  14.
