4.0L Engine

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

A single overhead camshaft per cylinder head provides valve actuation. The left camshaft accommodates a cam sensor pick-up wheel and is therefore longer. Each camshaft is supported by 4 bearing journals. A thrust plate attached to the rear of each cylinder head controls camshaft end play. Right and left camshaft driving sprockets support a timing mark, are keyed, and not interchangeable because of the cam sensor pick-up wheel on the left sprocket. Camshaft bearing lubrication is provided via an oil supply passage through each rocker shaft pedestal dowel.

To remove the camshaft, refer to Camshaft and Valve Lifters, removal & installation.

  3. Inspect the camshaft bearing journals for wear or damage.
  4.
  5. Inspect the cylinder head and check oil return holes.
  6.
  7. Check both camshaft surfaces for wear or damage.
  8.
  9. Check the cam lobe and bearing surfaces for abnormal wear and damage. Replace the camshaft if defective.
  10.
  11. Measure the lobe actual wear and replace the camshaft if it is out of limit. Standard value is 0.001 inch (0.0254mm), wear limit is 0.010 inch (0.254mm).
    NOTE
If the camshaft is replaced due to lobe wear or damage, replace the rocker arms.
