Removal & Installation



3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

This engine uses a 2-piece oil pan. RTV is used between the upper and lower pans. The lower pan should not be separated from the upper pan unless this junction is leaking.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine oil dipstick.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Drain the engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 7 structural collar bolts (2) and the structural collar (1).
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper oil pan bolts, oil pan (3), and gasket.

To install:

  1. Clean the sealing surfaces and apply a 1 / 8 inch bead of MOPAR® Engine RTV GEN II at the parting line (1) of the chain case cover and the rear seal retainer (1).

  3. Position a new pan gasket on the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan (3) and tighten the bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the structural collar (1) and tighten the bolts (2) to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle and install the oil dipstick.
  12.  
  13. Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.  

4.0L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cross-under pipe.

  7. Remove the oil dipstick tube bolt and remove the oil dipstick tube.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front maniverter (manifold/converter).

  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cross-under pipe bracket from the bottom of the transaxle bellhousing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt and the torque converter access cover.
  16.  
  17. Drain the engine oil.
  18.  
  19. Remove the support bolt (1) from the oil filter housing (2).

  21. Remove the bolt (2) from the oil filter housing and remove the oil filter housing with the oil filter (3) from the oil cooler (1).

  23. Remove the oil cooler connector bolt and reposition the oil cooler.

  25. Remove the oil pan fasteners. Remove the oil pan.
    NOTE
    A small amount of oil will remain in the oil pan. Use care when removing the oil pan from the engine.

  27. Remove the oil pan gasket.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil pan and all the gasket surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 1 / 8 inch bead of MOPAR® Engine RTV GEN II at the parting line of the oil pump housing and the rear seal retainer.

  5. Install the oil pan gasket to the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan and tighten the oil pan bolts and nuts, in the sequence illustrated, to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  9. Position the oil cooler to the engine block. Install the oil cooler connector bolt and tighten it to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

  11. Position the oil filter adaptor and the oil filter (3) to the oil cooler (1). Install the bolt (2) finger tight.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil filter housing support bolt (1) and tighten to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the previously installed oil filter adapter bolt (2) to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the torque converter access cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the cross-under pipe bracket. Tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the front maniverter.
  22.  
  23. Install the oil dipstick tube and the oil dipstick tube bolt.
  24.  
  25. Install the cross-under pipe.
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level.
  28.  
  29. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  30.  
  31. Start the engine and check for leaks.
