Timing Belt Front Cover

Removal & Installation



4.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolts for the power steering pump. Reposition the power steering pump aside.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower front timing belt cover fasteners and the lower timing belt cover (1).

  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Support the engine with a floor jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front engine mount.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
  28.  
  29. Remove the upper timing belt cover bolts and remove the front upper timing belt cover.
  30.  

To install:


NOTE
The timing cover bolts and bolt holes to the engine block must be thoroughly cleaned and free of oil residue before assembly. IN ADDITION add thread sealant to the timing cover bolts that mount to the oil pump.

  1. Install the front timing belt cover and 14 bolts.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the timing cover bolts as follows:

    M6 bolts: 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    M8 bolts: 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    M10 bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)

  5. Install the upper engine mount and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the floor jack and raise the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the power steering pump fasteners. Tighten the bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Torque the fastener to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
