Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation



3.3L & 3.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Drain the engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right wheel and inner splash shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pick-up tube.
  16.  
  17. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  18.  
  19. Remove the A/C compressor with the lines attached and set it aside.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft vibration damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  22.  
  23. Remove the radiator lower hose.
  24.  
  25. Remove the heater hose from the timing chain cover housing or water pump inlet tube (if equipped with an engine oil cooler).
  26.  
  27. Remove the right side engine mount.
  28.  
  29. Remove the camshaft position sensor from the timing chain cover.
  30.  
  31. Remove the water pump for cover removal clearance.
  32.  
  33. Remove the timing chain cover fasteners. Remove the timing chain cover.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Be sure the mating surfaces of the chain case cover and the cylinder block are clean and free from burrs. The crankshaft oil seal must be removed to insure correct oil pump engagement.
    NOTE
    DO NOT USE SEALER ON THE COVER GASKET

  3. Position a new gasket on the timing cover. Adhere a new gasket to the chain case cover, making sure that the lower edge of the gasket is flush to 0.020 inch (0.5mm) passed the lower edge of the cover.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the crankshaft so that the oil pump drive flats are in the vertical position.
  6.  
  7. Position the oil pump inner rotor so the mating flats are in the same position as the crankshaft drive flats.
    WARNING
    Make sure the oil pump is engaged on the crankshaft correctly or severe damage may result.

  8.  
  9. Install the timing cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing chain cover bolts. Tighten the bolts to:
    1. M8 bolts: 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M10 bolts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    4.

  13. Install the crankshaft front oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Seal, removal & installation.
  14.  
  15. Install the water pump and pulley. Refer to Water Pump, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Install the crankshaft vibration damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  18.  
  19. Install the right side engine mount.
  20.  
  21. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  22.  
  23. Connect the heater return hose at the rear of the timing chain cover or at the water pump inlet tube (if equipped with an engine oil cooler).
  24.  
  25. Connect the radiator lower hose.
  26.  
  27. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Heating & Air Condition, Compressor, removal & installation.
  28.  
  29. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  30.  
  31. Install the oil pump pick-up tube with a new O-ring. Tighten the attaching bolt to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  34.  
  35. Install the inner splash shield and the right front wheel.
  36.  
  37. Fill the crankcase with engine oil to the proper level.
  38.  
  39. Fill the cooling system with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  40.  
  41. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the nut to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
