Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

NOTE
The wheel bearing is designed to last for the life of the vehicle and requires no type of periodic maintenance.

The following procedure may be used for diagnosing the condition of the wheel bearing and hub.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly, disc brake caliper, and brake rotor.
  6.
  7. Rotate the wheel hub checking for resistance or roughness.
  8.

Any roughness or resistance to rotation may indicate dirt intrusion or a failed hub bearing. If the bearing exhibits any of these conditions, the hub and bearing will require replacement. Do not attempt to disassemble the bearing for repair. If the wheel bearing is disassembled for any reason, it must be replaced. Damaged bearing seals and the resulting excessive grease loss may also require bearing replacement. Moderate grease seepage from the bearing is considered normal and should not require replacement of the wheel bearing.

WARNING
Only frame contact or wheel lift hoisting equipment can be used on this vehicle. It cannot be hoisted using equipment designed to lift a vehicle by the rear axle. If this type of hoisting equipment is used, damage to the rear suspension components will occur.

NOTE
If a rear suspension component becomes bent, damaged, or fails, no attempt should be made to straighten or repair it. Always replace it with a new component.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the exhaust heat shield above the exhaust system covering the wheel speed sensor wiring connector (right side only).
  8.
  9. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from the wheel speed sensor connector.
  10.
  11. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the routing clips along the underbody of the vehicle.
  12.
  13. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the routing clips along the brake flex hose.
  14.
  15. Remove the wheel speed sensor routing clip from the rear axle.
  16.
  17. Remove the screw securing the parking brake cable routing the bracket to the axle.
  18.
  19. Remove the 2 bolts securing the disc brake caliper and the adapter bracket to the axle.
  20.
  21. Remove the disc brake caliper and the adapter bracket from the axle and the rotor as an assembly. Hang the assembly out of way using a wire or a bungee cord. Use care not to overextend the brake hose when doing this.
  22.
  23. Remove any retaining clips, then slide the brake rotor off the hub and bearing.
  24.
  25. Remove the bolts (2) securing the hub and bearing (1) to the axle (3). Remove the hub and bearing with the wheel speed sensor attached and the brake shield.
  26.
  27. Separate the brake shield from the hub and bearing.

To install:

NOTE
The hub and bearing mounting surfaces on the axle and the brake shield must be smooth and completely free of foreign material or nicks prior to installing the hub and bearing assembly.

  1. Position the brake shield on the wheel speed sensor and route the wheel speed sensor cable through the access hole in the shield.
  2.
  3. Install the hub and bearing with the wheel speed sensor attached and the brake shield squarely onto the end of the axle. Make sure the wheel speed sensor is positioned toward the rear of vehicle. Install the mounting bolts (2) securing the hub and bearing (1) to the axle (3). Tighten the mounting bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the brake rotor over the hub and bearing.
  6.
  7. Install the disc brake caliper and the adapter bracket over the axle and the rotor as an assembly.
  8.
  9. Install the 2 bolts securing the disc brake caliper and the adapter bracket to the axle. Tighten the mounting bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  10.
  11. Position the parking brake cable routing bracket to the axle and install the screw securing it in place. Tighten the screw to 55 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install the wheel speed sensor routing clip into the hole in the rear axle.
  14.
  15. Install the wheel speed sensor into the routing clips along the brake flex hose.
  16.
  17. Install the wheel speed sensor into the routing clips along the underbody of the vehicle.
  18.
  19. Connect the vehicle wiring harness to the wheel speed sensor connector.
  20.
  21. Install the exhaust heat shield above the exhaust system covering the wheel speed sensor wiring connector (right side only).
  22.
  23. Install the tire and wheel assembly and tighten wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  24.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.
  27. Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the vehicle has a firm brake pedal before moving the vehicle.
