3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

NOTE
Only one main bearing should be selectively fitted while all the other main bearing caps are properly tightened.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Start a bearing in place, and insert Main Bearing Tool C-3059 into the oil hole of the crankshaft.
  4.
  5. Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise sliding the bearing into position. Remove Special Main Bearing Tool C-3059.
  6.
  7. Inspect the main cap bolts for stretching. Replace the bolts that are stretched.
    NOTE
The main cap bolts should be examined before reuse. Bolt stretch can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale, the bolt must be replaced.

  8.
  9. Install each main cap and tighten the bolts finger tight.
  10.
  11. Tighten number 1, 3, and 4 main cap bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm), plus 1 / 4 turn.
  12.
  13. Rotate the crankshaft until the number 6 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
  14.
  15. To ensure correct thrust bearing alignment, the following procedure must be done:
    1. Move the crankshaft all the way to the rear of its travel.
    2.
    3. Then, move the crankshaft all the way to the front of its travel.
    4.
    5. Wedge an appropriate tool between the rear of the cylinder block and the rear crankshaft counterweight. This will hold the crankshaft in its most forward position.
    6.
    7. Tighten the No. 2 Thrust Bearing cap bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm), plus 1 / 4 turn. Remove the holding tool.
    8.

  16.
  17. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  18.
  19. Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level.

Specific to:

Chrysler Town & Country 2008-2009

Dodge Grand Caravan 2008-2009

The bearing caps are not interchangeable and are marked to insure correct assembly. The upper and lower bearing halves are NOT interchangeable.

NOTE
Main bearings are select fit.

NOTE
Only one main bearing should be selectively fitted while all the other main bearing caps are properly tightened.

NOTE
When installing a new upper bearing shell, slightly chamfer the sharp edges from the plain side.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Lubricate the main bearing with clean engine oil.
  4.
  5. Start the bearing in place, and insert Main Bearing Tool C-3059 into the oil hole of crankshaft.
  6.
  7. Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise sliding the bearing into position. Remove Special Main Bearing Tool C-3059.
    NOTE
Lubricate the main bearing cap bolts with engine oil before installation.

  8.
  9. Lubricate and install the lower bearing half and main cap. Tighten the bolts finger tight.
  10.
  11. For installing the thrust washers at the No. 2 main bearing location, use the following procedure:
    1. Move the crankshaft forward to the limit of its travel. Lubricate and install the front thrust washer by rolling the washer onto the machined shelf between the No. 2 upper main bulk head and the crankshaft thrust surface.
    2.
    3. Move the crankshaft rearward to the limit of its travel. Lubricate and install the rear thrust washer by rolling the washer onto the machined shelf between the No. 2 upper main bulk head and the crankshaft thrust surface.
    4.

  12.
  13. Install each main bearing cap and tighten the inner bolts finger tight.
  14.
  15. Tighten the inner main bearing cap bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus 1 / 4 turn. The main bearing cap bolts must be tightened in the proper sequence:

Step 1: The inner main cap bolts

Step 2: The windage tray bolts

Step 3: The main cap tie (horizontal) bolts

  16.
  17. Measure the crankshaft end play.
  18.
  19. Install the windage tray. Lubricate the bolts with engine oil and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm), plus 1 / 4 turn.
  20.
  21. Install the main cap tie (horizontal) bolts and tighten to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  22.
  23. Install the oil pick-up tube.
  24.
  25. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  26.
  27. Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil to the correct level.
