Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING
    Avoid damaging the camshaft bearing surfaces.



    Engine assembly
     
    Rocker arm covers
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Rocker arm bolts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods
     
    Lifter guide bolts and the guide
     
    Valve lifters from the bores
     
    Crankshaft balancer
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing chain and sprockets
     
    Oil pump driven gear
     
    Camshaft thrust plate
     
    Camshaft
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Coat the camshaft with assembly lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft
     
    Camshaft thrust plate and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil pump driven gear and torque the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm)
     
    Timing chain and sprocket and torque the bolt to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm)
     
    Front cover and torque the small bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), the medium bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) and the large bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Crankshaft balancer and torque the bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Lubricate the bearing surfaces with Molykote®.
    NOTE
    Installation of a new camshaft or a wear pattern on the old valve lifter will require the replacement of the camshaft and lifters together. If camshaft replacement is not necessary, be sure to install the used valve lifters in their original position.

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The only time valve adjustment in needed is if there was a valve job performed or the rocker studs have been replaced with an adjustable rocker arm stud. The rocker arm stud installed from the factory should be shouldered and not need any adjustment.



    Lifters in their original locations
     
    Lifter guide and torque guide bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Pushrods, rocker arms, balls and bolts and torque the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional 30 degree turn
     
    Intake manifold and torque the lower manifold bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm) and the upper manifold bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Rocker arm covers and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Engine assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  10.  

3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel injector sight shield
     
    Thermostat housing for clearance when installing the Camshaft Holding Fixture
     
    Camshaft cover
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the crankshaft so the camshaft flats are parallel to the camshaft-s sealing surface, then install a camshaft holding fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install a timing chain/sprocket holding fixture J 42042.
  12.  
  13. Evenly slide the camshaft sprocket and chain from the camshafts onto the holding tool.
    NOTE
    The camshaft bearing caps are marked. Be sure the raised portion of the cap faces the outside of the engine. They must always be installed in their original positions.

  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Camshaft bearing caps
     
    Camshaft holding fixture
     
    Camshafts

To install:

  1. Coat the rocker arms with engine oil and place them in their original positions.
    NOTE
    Be sure to install the rounded end on the lash adjuster and the flat end on the tip of the valve.

  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Use the camshaft flats to turn the camshaft.



    Camshafts, lubricated with engine oil, with the sprocket drive pin notch located at the top
     
    Bearing caps and torque the bolts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm) plus an additional 22 degree turn
     
    Camshaft Holding Fixture tool onto the camshaft(s) at the rear of the cylinder head
     

  4.  
  5. Compress the secondary timing chain tensioner by hand and insert a wire into the access hole to lock it in place.
  6.  
  7. Slide the camshaft sprockets/timing chain off the tool and onto the camshafts. Be sure to align the drive pins.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing chain/sprocket holder from the front of the cylinder head. Torque the sprocket bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm); then, an additional 45 degree turn.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wire from the chain tensioner and allow the tensioner to apply pressure to the chain.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft holding fixture.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft cover and torque the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Thermostat housing, if removed
     
    Fuel injector sight shield and torque the nuts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  20.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    CAUTION
    Only a MVAC-trained, EPA-certified, automotive technician should service the A/C system or its components.

  2.  
  3. Discharge the A/C system. Refer to the Heating & Air Conditioning Section.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Radiator with the air conditioning condenser assembly
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Valve lifters
     
    Front cover
     
    Camshaft sprocket and timing chain
     
    Camshaft thrust plate
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the camshaft assembly, as follows:
    1. Step 1: Install one 1 / 2 -20 x 6 inch bolt in the camshaft front bolt hole
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Carefully rotate and pull the camshaft assembly out of the bearings.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Inspect the camshaft for damage and replace if necessary.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft lubricated with assembly lubricant
     
    Thrust plate and torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)

    Front cover and torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus an additional 40 degree turn
     
    Valve lifters
     
    Rocker arm cover and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Radiator with the air conditioning condenser and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Front Seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil level indicator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left and right exhaust manifolds.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump.
  12.  
  13. Remove the water pump bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump and gasket. Discard the gasket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  18.  
  19. Unclip the wiring harness from the front of the engine.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the engine coolant air bleed pipe hoses and clamps.
  22.  
  23. Remove the three coolant pump manifold to cylinder head bolts.

  25. Remove the coolant pump manifold bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the coolant pump manifold and gaskets. Discard the gaskets.
  28.  
  29. Clean and inspect the water pump manifold mounting surfaces.
  30.  
  31. Remove the intake manifold.
    WARNING
    Do not lift the manifold assembly by the electrical lead frame.

  33. Remove the valve lifter oil manifold bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the oil passages of the manifold. Plug, as required.

  35. Remove the valve lifter oil manifold.
    NOTE
    Remove only the outer gasket from the manifold. Do not disassemble any of the internal components of the manifold in an attempt to remove the 8 inner sealing gaskets. If the inner gaskets are cut or damaged, replace the manifold as an assembly. Only use a wire-cutter type tool in order to minimize the amount of debris. Do not use a rotary-type cutting tool on the retaining straps.

  37. Identify the 8 gasket retaining strap locations.

  39. Using a wire-cutter type tool, snip the 8 retaining straps of the outer gasket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the outer gasket from the manifold.
  42.  
  43. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe.
  44.  
  45. Remove the left and right valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Rocker Arm Removal & Installation.
  46.  
  47. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Rocker Arm Removal & Installation.
  48.  
  49. Remove the bolts.

  51. Remove the guides (2) with the lifters. Note the installed position of the guides. The notched area of the guide is to align with the locating tab of the block.

  53. Remove the valve lifters (1, 3 [on-demand lifter]) from the guide.
  54.  
  55. Organize or mark the components so they can be installed in the same location from which they were removed. The displacement on demand lifters are installed into the guide by aligning the notched area of the guide with the raised surface on the side of the lifter.
  56.  
  57. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts.
  58.  
  59. Remove the front cover bolts.
  60.  
  61. Remove the front cover and gasket.

  63. Rotate the crankshaft in order to align the timing marks (1, 2).
  64.  
  65. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  66.  
  67. Remove the camshaft sprocket and timing chain.

  69. Remove the camshaft retainer bolts and retainer.
  70.  
  71. Remove the camshaft.
    1. Install 3 M8-125 x 100 mm bolts in the camshaft front bolt holes.
    2.  
    3. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully rotate and pull the camshaft out of the engine block.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolts from the camshaft.
    6.

To install:


NOTE
If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters must also be replaced.

  1. Lubricate the camshaft journals and the bearings with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install 3 M8-125 x 100 mm bolts in the NEW camshaft front bolt holes.
  4.  
  5. Using the bolts as a handle, carefully install the NEW camshaft into the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 bolts from the camshaft.
    NOTE
    Install the retainer plate with the sealing gasket facing the engine block. The gasket surface on the engine block should be clean and free of dirt or debris.

  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft retainer and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    NOTE
    Properly locate the camshaft sprocket onto the locating pin of the camshaft. The sprocket teeth and timing chain teeth must mesh. The camshaft and crankshaft sprocket alignment marks MUST be aligned properly. Position the camshaft sprocket alignment mark in the 6 o'clock position.

  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft sprocket and timing chain. If necessary, rotate the camshaft or crankshaft sprocket in order to align the timing marks.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Inspect the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets for proper timing mark alignment.
  16.  
  17. Install the front cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the oil pan-to-front cover bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    NOTE
    When using the valve lifters again, install the lifters to their original locations. If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters must also be replaced. Each of the 4 valve guide assemblies will contain 2 displacement on demand valve lifters and 2 non-displacement on demand valve lifters. With the lifters and guides properly installed, cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7 lifter bores will each contain 2 displacement on demand valve lifters.

  20.  
  21. Lubricate the valve lifters and engine block valve lifter bores with clean engine oil.
  22.  
  23. Insert the valve lifters into the lifter guides. Align the flat area on the top of the non displacement on demand lifter with the flat area in the lifter guide bore. Push the lifter completely into the guide bore. The displacement on demand lifters are to be installed into the guide, with the notch in the guide aligned with the raised area of the lifter.
  24.  
  25. Install the valve lifters and guide assembly to the engine block.
  26.  
  27. Install the valve lifter guide bolts. Tighten the valve lifter guide bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
  28.  
  29. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods.
  30.  
  31. Install the left and right valve rocker arm covers.
  32.  
  33. Install the coolant air bleed pipe.
    NOTE
    All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly. Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the oil passages of the manifold. Plug as required.

  34.  
  35. Install the service gasket onto the manifold.
  36.  
  37. Install the valve lifter oil manifold with gasket.
  38.  
  39. Install the manifold bolts. Tighten the manifold bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the intake manifold.
    WARNING
    DO NOT use cooling system seal tabs, or similar compounds, unless otherwise instructed. The use of cooling system seal tabs, or similar compounds, may restrict coolant flow through the passages of the cooling system or the engine components. Restricted coolant flow may cause engine overheating and/or damage to the cooling system or the engine components/assembly.


    NOTE
    All gasket surfaces are to be free of oil and other foreign material during assembly.

  42.  
  43. Install the water pump manifold and NEW gaskets. Tighten the M10 bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). Tighten the M8 bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install the water pump manifold bolts.
  46.  
  47. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  48.  
  49. Install the cylinder head to coolant pump manifold bolts.
  50.  
  51. Connect the engine coolant air bleed pipe hose and clamp.
  52.  
  53. Install the water pump and a NEW gasket.
  54.  
  55. Install the water pump bolts until sung.
  56.  
  57. Install the left and right exhaust manifolds.
  58.  
  59. Install the oil level indicator.
  60.  
  61. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  62.  
  63. Install the engine.
  64.
