Removal & Installation



3.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine mount struts
     
    Drive belt
     
    A/C compressor mounting bolts and reposition the compressor
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Catalytic converter from the right exhaust manifold
     
    Oil level sensor electrical connection
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transaxle brace from the oil pan
     
    Transaxle mount lower nuts
     
    Engine mount lower nuts
     

  10.  
  11. Raise the engine to gain access to the oil pan.

    Engine mount bracket with the engine mount from the oil pan
     
    Right lower ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Right outer tie rod from the steering knuckle
     
    Right side frame bolts, loosen only
     
    Left side frame bolts, loosen only
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan.

To install:

  1. Apply a small amount of sealer on both sides of the rear main bearing cap between the gasket and the engine.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket and torque the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Front and rear oil pan bolts and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Frame bolts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm)
     
    Right outer tie rod to the steering knuckle
     
    Right lower ball joint to the steering knuckle
     
    Engine mount and bracket to the oil pan and torque the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the engine into position.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Engine mount lower nuts and torque the nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    Transaxle mount lower nuts and torque the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
     
    Transaxle brace to the oil pan and torque the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)
     
    Starter motor and torque the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
     
    Oil level sensor electrical connection
     
    Catalytic converter to the rear manifold and torque the nuts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the engine support fixture.

    A/C compressor and torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     
    Drive belt
     
    Engine mount struts and torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with new oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  14.  

3.5L & 3.9L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Oil filter cap and filter
     
    Oil level sensor electrical connector
     
    Transaxle brace
     
    Oil pan

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pan with a new gasket, DO NOT tighten the bolts
     
    Transaxle brace on the engine block only and torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Brace-to-oil pan bolts, loosely install them
     

  2.  
  3. Align the rear of the oil pan flush with the rear of the engine block. Use a straight edge for reference.
  4.  
  5. Press the front of the oil pan against the transaxle brace; then, torque the brace-to-oil pan bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Be sure to keep the rear of the pan flush with the rear of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Torque the oil pan bolts in sequence to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Torque the brace-to-transaxle bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Oil level sensor electrical connection
     
    Drain plug and torque it to 15 ft. lbs. (20 m)
     
    New oil filter and torque the cap to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  12.  
  13. Refill the engine with clean oil.
  14.  
  15. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  16.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Throttle body air inlet duct
     
    Engine mount struts
     
    Accessory drive belt
     

  6.  
  7. Install an engine support fixture.

    Catalytic converter from the right exhaust manifold
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Right side splash shield
     
    Oil filter and discard
     
    A/C compressor bracket and reposition the compressor
     
    Power steering oil cooler pipe brackets from the frame
     
    Engine mount bracket bolts
     
    Lower engine mount nuts
     
    Torque converter cover
     
    Oil level sensor electrical connector
     
    Oil level sensor
     

  8.  
  9. Raise the vehicle and place a support under the frame.

    Right side frame bolts and loosen the left side bolts
     
    Engine mount and bracket
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pump pipe and screen

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not over-tighten the oil pan bolts or damage to the pan may occur.



    New oil pan gasket and the oil pump pipe and screen assembly and torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
     



    Oil pan and torque the bolts to 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Engine mount and bracket and torque the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm)
     
    New right side frame bolts and torque all the bolts to 133 ft. lbs. (180 Nm)
     
    Lower engine mount and torque the nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
     
    Oil level sensor and torque the fastener to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Oil level wire connector
     
    Torque converter cover and torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Power steering oil cooler pipe brackets to the frame
     
    A/C compressor and torque the upper bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the lower bolt to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    New oil filter
     
    Drain plug and torque the plug to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     
    Splash shield
     
    Right front wheel
     
    Catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold and torque the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the engine support fixture.

    Drive belt
     
    Engine mount struts to the engine and torque the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (56 Nm)
     
    Throttle body air inlet duct
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with new oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Road test the vehicle, check the front end alignment and adjust if necessary.
  10.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left engine mount strut and the bracket from the upper radiator support.

  7. Assemble the J-28467-501 (2) to the J 28467-B cross bar (1).

  9. Install the J 28467-B (1) and the J-28467-501 (2) to the fender rails.

  11. Install the J 36462-A (1) to the cross bar (2).

  13. Install the support lift hook (2) to the cross bar (1).
  14.  
  15. Install the support hook (1) to the right engine lift hook (3).
  16.  
  17. Install the support hook (1) to the J 36462-A (2).

  19. Install the support hook (1) to the left engine lift hook (3).
  20.  
  21. Raise the engine to release the pressure off of the engine mounts.
  22.  
  23. Raise and support the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  26.  
  27. Remove and discard the 2 plastic braces from the front of the radiator lower air deflector. The plastic braces are directly below the front cradle bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the positive battery cable and the retainers from the frame and position aside.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the frame.
  32.  
  33. Secure the power steering return hose.
  34.  
  35. Remove the stabilizer shaft links and rotate the stabilizer shaft upward to gain access to the mounting bolts in the power steering gear.
  36.  
  37. Remove the mounting bolts from the power steering gear.
  38.  
  39. Secure the power steering gear.
  40.  
  41. Remove the nuts that secure the engine mount to the frame.
  42.  
  43. Remove the nuts which secure the transaxle mount to the frame.
  44.  
  45. If applicable, disconnect the front wheel speed sensor harness connectors.
  46.  
  47. If applicable, disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness from the frame and lower control arms.
  48.  
  49. If applicable, remove the retainers at the front wheel speed harness from the frame and from the lower control arms.
  50.  
  51. Separate both of the lower ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  52.  
  53. Remove both front drivetrain reinforcements using the following procedure.
    1. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement to support brace bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement to front frame mounting stud nut.
    4.  
    5. Remove the drivetrain reinforcement from the vehicle.
    6.

  55. Lower the vehicle until the frame contacts the J 39580.
  56.  
  57. Remove the radiator to front frame brackets.

  63. Raise the vehicle in order to separate the frame from the body.

  65. Drain the engine oil and remove the engine oil filter.
  66.  
  67. Reinstall the drain plug and oil filter until snug.

  69. Remove the transaxle converter cover bolt/stud and cover.
  70.  
  71. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  72.  
  73. Remove engine harness retainer from the front of oil pan.
  74.  
  75. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  76.  
  77. Remove the oil pan.
    NOTE
    DO NOT allow foreign material to enter the oil passages of the oil pan, cap or cover the openings as required.

  79. Drill out the oil pan gasket retaining rivets, if required.

  81. Remove the gasket from the pan.
  82.  
  83. Discard the gasket and rivets.
  84.  
  85. Clean and inspect the engine oil pan.

To install:


NOTE
The alignment of the structural oil pan is critical. The rear bolt hole locations of the oil pan provide mounting points for the transmission housing. To ensure the rigidity of the powertrain and correct transmission alignment, it is important that the rear of the block and the rear of the oil pan are flush, or even. The rear of the oil pan must NEVER protrude beyond the engine block and transmission housing plane. Do NOT reuse the oil pan gasket. It is NOT necessary to rivet the NEW gasket to the oil pan.

  1. Apply a 5 mm (0.20 in.) bead of sealant GM P/N 12346141 or 12378577 (Canadian P/N 89022195), or equivalent 20 mm (0.80 in.) long to the engine block. Apply the sealant directly onto the tabs of the front/rear cover gasket that protrudes into the oil pan surface.
    NOTE
    Be sure to align the oil gallery passages in the oil pan and engine block properly with the oil pan gasket.

  3. Install the gasket onto the pan.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan bolts to the pan and through the gasket.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan, gasket, and bolts to the engine block. Tighten the oil pan and oil pan-to-front cover bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten the oil pan-to-rear cover bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.). Tighten the transmission housing, converter cover, and transmission bolts/stud to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  9. Install engine harness to front of oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Install the transaxle converter cover and bolt/stud. Tighten the bolt/stud to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
  14.  
  15. Install new engine oil and a new oil filter.
  16.  
  17. Position the engine support table with the frame under the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle to the frame.
  20.  
  21. Loosely install the bolts to secure the rear frame to the body.
  22.  
  23. Loosely install the bolts to secure the front frame to the body.
  24.  
  25. Align the frame to the body by inserting two 19 X 203 mm (0.74 X 8 in) pins in the alignment holes on the right side of the frame.
  26.  
  27. Install the front and rear frame bolts. Tighten the front bolts to 145 Nm (107 ft. lbs.). Tighten the rear bolts to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.).
  28.  
  29. Install the drivetrain reinforcements using the following procedure:
    1. Position the drivetrain reinforcements to the front frame mount stud to the support brace.
    2.  
    3. Loosely install the drivetrain reinforcement to support brace bolts.
    4.  
    5. Install the drivetrain reinforcement to cradle mount nut. Tighten the drivetrain reinforcement brace nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Tighten the drivetrain reinforcement brace bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  31. Install the radiator to front frame brackets.
  32.  
  33. Connect both the lower ball joints to the steering knuckle.
  34.  
  35. Install the nuts that secure the engine mount to the frame. Install the lower engine mount nuts. Tighten the nuts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the engine mount bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the nuts which secure the transaxle mount to the frame. Tighten the transaxle mount lower nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
  40.  
  41. Install the steering gear mounting bolts.
  42.  
  43. Install the stabilizer shaft links.
  44.  
  45. If applicable, connect the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the frame and lower control arm.
  46.  
  47. If applicable, connect the front wheel speed sensor connectors.
  48.  
  49. If applicable, install the front wheel speed harness retainers to the frame and to the lower control arm.
  50.  
  51. Install the positive battery cable and retainers to the frame.
  52.  
  53. Install the power steering cooler pipe.
  54.  
  55. Connect the fog lamp harness connectors.
  56.  
  57. Install the front tires and wheels.
  58.  
  59. Lower the vehicle.
  60.  
  61. Remove the engine support fixture.
  62.  
  63. Inspect the front wheel alignment.
  64.
