Power Sunroof

Diagnosis & Testing

Perform the Initialization/Teach Process any time a new sunroof motor actuator is installed in the vehicle or any time an existing sunroof motor actuator is removed from the vehicle.

The sunroof motor and sunroof module are integral parts of an assembly and are not serviced separately. If voltage is not measured on the sunroof switch open signal or sunroof switch close signal circuits, the fault could be in the accessory voltage circuit, battery positive voltage circuit or sunroof motor/module ground circuit. If the sunroof motor/module is not being powered, neither will the sunroof switch signal circuits.

Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom. Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions.

Initialization Procedure
Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initialization/Teach Process
New Sunroof Motor Actuator

Perform the Initialization/Teach Process any time a new sunroof motor actuator is installed in the vehicle.

  1. Ensure that the electrical harness on the headliner is connected to the sunroof.
  2.
  3. Press the sunroof switch to the close position until the window stops at the front hard stop in the fully closed position, then moves slightly back to the soft stop position. Release the switch. (This is the initialization portion).
  4.
  5. Within 6 seconds, press and hold the close switch again. After 3 more seconds, the sunroof window will move toward the open position. This is the teach portion.
  6.
  7. Continue holding the switch until the sunroof window moves back to the close and stops at the closed position. Release the button. The initialization/Teach procedure is complete.
  8.
  9. Verify the operation of the sunroof.
  10.

Re-Initialization/Teach For The Original Motor
  1. Perform the Re-initialization/Teach process any time the sunroof motor in removed from the sunroof.
  2.
  3. Ensure that the electrical harness on the headliner is connected to the sunroof.
  4.
  5. Press the sunroof switch to the close position until the window stops at the front soft stop in the fully closed position. Release the switch then press to the close position again and hold for 10 seconds or greater. The sunroof will then stall at the hard stop, and move back slightly to the soft stop position. Release the switch. (This is the re-initialization portion).
  6.
  7. Within 6 seconds, press and hold the close switch again. After 3 more seconds, the sunroof window will move toward the open position. (This is the teach portion).
  8.
  9. Continue holding the switch until the sunroof window moves back to the close and stops at the closed position. Release the button. The initialization/Teach procedure is complete.
  10.
  11. Verify the operation of the sunroof.
  12.

If in the Initialization/Teach Process is not complete, the following actions must take place before the initialization cycle is done:

The sunroof switch is not held in the close position

The ignition and/or battery power has been removed

The glass panel has not reached the closed position

The Initialization/Teach Process must be restarted if the procedure is not carried out completely.
