Transmission Removal & Installation

3.5L & 3.7L Engines



Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Ensure the vehicle is in the park position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the filler tube.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transfer case assembly.
    CAUTION
    Do not pull on the boot portion of the cable.

  8.  
  9. Complete the following in order to disconnect the range selector cable from the transmission range selector lever ball stud.

    1. Insert a flat-bladed tool between the range selector cable end and the range selector lever.
    2.  
    3. Pry the range selector cable end away from the range selector lever.
    4.

  11. Remove the retainer from the range selector cable.
  12.  
  13. Push the range selector cable locking tabs inward toward each other to release from the bracket.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the transmission main electrical connector.

  17. Remove the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the right side of the transmission, and position the harness over the transmission.

  19. Disconnect the park/neutral back up switch electrical connector.

  21. Remove the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the left side of the transmission, and position the wiring harness aside.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the transmission vent hose retainer from the heater pipe bracket.

  25. Remove the nuts securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission.

  27. Disconnect the fuel hose/pipe retainer from the range selector cable bracket, and position aside the fuel hose/pipe bundle.

  29. Remove the inspection plug from the transmission.

  31. Mark the torque converter to flexplate/flywheel orientation to ensure proper realignment.

  33. Remove the engine protection shield in order to access the harmonic balancer bolt.

  35. Remove the service slot plug.

  37. Repeat the following steps for all 3 torque converter bolts:
    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to access the torque converter bolt through the service slot.
    2.  
    3. Remove the torque converter bolt using one of the following:

      18 mm crowfoot wrench
       
      Short T50 TORX bit

  39. Place an oil pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler pipes from the transmission ONLY.
  42.  
  43. Plug the open outlet ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  44.  
  45. Support and secure the transmission using a suitable transmission jack.
  46.  
  47. Remove the transmission crossmember.
  48.  
  49. Remove the 7 transmission mounting bolts and 2 studded mounting bolts.

  51. Position the heater pipe out of the way to allow clearance for the transmission.

  53. Remove the remaining transmission mounting bolts.

  55. Separate the transmission from the engine alignment dowels.
    CAUTION
    Ensure clearance is maintained between the transmission and the following:



    The catalytic converter
     
    The engine wiring harness
     
    The fuel hose/pipe brackets
     
    The heater pipe
     
    The transmission oil cooler pipes

  57. Using the transmission jack, carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle.
  58.  
  59. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

  61. Perform the flush and flow test on the automatic transmission oil cooler.
  62.  

To install:

  1. Remove the J 21366 from the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the torque converter is fully engaged with the transmission oil pump.
    CAUTION
    Ensure clearance is maintained between the transmission and the following:



    The catalytic converter
     
    The engine wiring harness
     
    The fuel hose/pipe brackets
     
    The heater pipe
     
    The transmission oil cooler pipes

  5. Using the transmission jack, carefully raise the transmission to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Align the transmission with the engine alignment dowels.
    NOTE
    Ensure the torque converter turns freely while tightening the transmission mounting bolts.

  8.  
  9. Install the 2 transmission mounting bolts. Tighten the transmission mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    NOTE
    Ensure the studded mounting bolts are located in the correct position. The heater pipe must be secured with the 2 upper mounting bolts.

  11. Install the remaining 7 transmission mounting bolts and 2 studded mounting bolts. Tighten the transmission mounting bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the transmission crossmember.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Connect the transmission oil cooler pipes to the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Align the torque converter to flexplate/flywheel orientation marks made during the removal procedure.
  20.  
  21. Repeat the following steps for all 3 torque converter bolts:
    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to access the torque converter bolt holes in the flexplate/flywheel through the service slot.
    2.  
    3. To aid in alignment of the torque converter to the flexplate/flywheel. Install all 3 torque converter bolts before fully tightening using one of the following:

      18 mm crowfoot wrench
       
      Short T50 TORX bit

  23. Tighten the torque converter bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the inspection plug to the transmission.
  26.  
  27. Install the service slot plug.
  28.  
  29. Install the nuts securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission. Tighten the fuel hose/pipe bracket nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Connect the fuel hose/pipe retainer to the range selector cable bracket.
  32.  
  33. Connect the transmission vent hose retainer to the heater pipe bracket.
  34.  
  35. Install the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the left side of the transmission. Tighten the engine wiring harness retainer to transmission screw to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Connect the park/neutral back up switch electrical connector.
  38.  
  39. Lay the engine wiring harness over the transmission.
  40.  
  41. Connect the transmission main electrical connector.
  42.  
  43. Install the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the right side of the transmission. Tighten the engine wiring harness retainer to transmission screw to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install the range selector cable to the bracket.
  46.  
  47. Install the retainer to the range selector cable.
  48.  
  49. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector cable.
  50.  
  51. Install the transfer case assembly.
  52.  
  53. Install the engine protection shield.
  54.  
  55. Install the filler tube.
  56.  
  57. Fill the transmission fluid if necessary.
  58.  
  59. Lower the vehicle.
  60.

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Ensure the vehicle is in the park position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the filler tube.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left catalytic converters.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right heat shield bolts.

  13. Remove the left heat shield.
    CAUTION
    Do not pull on the boot portion of the cable.

  15. Disconnect the range selector cable end from the range selector lever.

  17. Remove the retainer from the range selector cable.
  18.  
  19. Push the range selector cable locking tabs inward toward each other to release the cable from the bracket.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the transmission main electrical connector.

  23. Remove the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the right side of the transmission, and position the harness over the transmission.

  25. Disconnect the park/neutral back up switch electrical connector.

  27. Remove the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the left side of the transmission, and position the wiring harness aside.

  29. Disconnect the transfer case vent hose retainer from the fuel hose/pipe bracket.

  31. Disconnect the transmission vent hose retainer from the fuel hose/pipe bracket.

  33. Remove the nut securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission.

  35. Remove the screw securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission.

  37. Disconnect the fuel hose/pipe retainer from the bracket on the transfer case adaptor, and position aside the fuel hose/pipe bundle.

  39. Remove the bolt securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission crossmember.

  41. Remove the inspection plug from the transmission.

  43. Mark the torque converter to flexplate/flywheel orientation to ensure proper realignment.

  45. Remove the left flywheel inspection cover bolt.

  47. Remove the left flywheel inspection cover.

  49. Remove the starter motor.
  50.  
  51. Remove the right flywheel inspection cover bolt.

  53. Remove the right flywheel inspection cover.

  55. Remove the engine protection shield in order to access the harmonic balancer bolt.

  57. Repeat the following steps for all torque converter bolts:

    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to access the torque converter bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the torque converter bolt.

  59. Place an oil pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes.
  60.  
  61. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler pipes from the transmission ONLY.
  62.  
  63. Plug the open outlet ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  64.  
  65. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary.
  66.  
  67. Support and secure the transmission using a suitable transmission jack.
  68.  
  69. Remove the transmission crossmember.
  70.  
  71. Remove the transfer case assembly.
  72.  
  73. Remove the 2 transmission mounting studs.

  75. Remove the 6 transmission mounting bolts.

  77. Separate the transmission from the engine alignment dowels.
    NOTE
    Ensure clearance is maintained between the transmission and the following:



    The engine wiring harness
     
    The fuel hose/pipe brackets
     
    The transmission oil cooler pipes

  79. Using the transmission jack, carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle.
  80.  
  81. Install the J 21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.

To install:

  1. Remove the J 21366 from the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the torque converter is fully engaged with the transmission oil pump.
    NOTE
    Ensure clearance is maintained between the transmission and the following:



    The engine wiring harness
     
    The fuel hose/pipe brackets
     
    The transmission oil cooler pipes
     

  4.  
  5. Using the transmission jack, carefully raise the transmission to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Align the transmission with the engine alignment dowels.
    NOTE
    Ensure the torque converter turns freely while tightening the transmission mounting bolts.

  8.  
  9. Install the 6 transmission mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the 2 transmission mounting studs. Tighten the studs to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the transfer case assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the transmission crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the transmission oil cooler pipes to the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Align the torque converter to flexplate/flywheel orientation marks made during the removal procedure.
  22.  
  23. Repeat the following steps for all 3 torque converter bolts:
    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to access the torque converter bolt holes.
    2.  
    3. To aid in alignment of the torque converter to the flexplate/flywheel. Install all 3 torque converter bolts before fully tightening.

  25. Tighten the torque converter bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  27. Install the engine protection shield.
  28.  
  29. Install the right flywheel inspection cover.
  30.  
  31. Install the right flywheel inspection cover bolt. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the starter motor.
  34.  
  35. Install the left flywheel inspection cover
  36.  
  37. Install the left flywheel inspection cover bolt. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the inspection plug to the transmission.
  40.  
  41. Install the bolt securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission crossmember. Tighten the bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Attach the fuel hose/pipe retainer to the bracket on the transfer case adaptor.
  44.  
  45. Install the screw securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission. Tighten the screw to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Install the nut securing the fuel hose/pipe bracket to the transmission. Tighten the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Connect the transmission vent hose retainer to the fuel hose/pipe bracket.
  50.  
  51. Connect the transfer case vent hose retainer to the fuel hose/pipe bracket.
  52.  
  53. Connect the park/neutral back up switch electrical connector.
  54.  
  55. Connect the transmission main electrical connector.
  56.  
  57. Install the screw securing the engine wiring harness to the right side of the transmission. Tighten the engine wiring harness retainer to transmission screw to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Ensure the range selector cable is routed exactly as originally positioned in the vehicle to avoid coming into contact with potential hazards such as hot, sharp, and moving objects.

  59. Install the range selector cable to the range selector cable bracket. Ensure the range selector cable retaining tabs fully engage the range selector cable bracket.
  60.  
  61. Install the retainer to the range selector cable.
  62.  
  63. Connect the range selector cable end to the transaxle range switch lever.
  64.  
  65. Install the left heat shield.
  66.  
  67. Install the left heat shield bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  68.  
  69. Install the right heat shield.
  70.  
  71. Install the right heat shield bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  72.  
  73. Install the right and left catalytic converters.
  74.  
  75. Install the filler tube.
  76.  
  77. Fill the transmission fluid if necessary.
  78.  
  79. Adjust the automatic transmission range selector cable.
  80.  
  81. Lower the vehicle.
