Removal & Installation



3.5L & 3.7L Engines

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Remove the flywheel.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the crankshaft or seal bore.

  2.  
  3. Using a suitable tool, pry the crankshaft rear oil seal from the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
  4.  
  5. Discard the seal.

To install:

  1. Lightly lubricate the crankshaft rear oil seal lip with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Position the plastic installation sleeve supplied with the new seal to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Use the J 44215 with the J 8092 and a hammer to install the crankshaft rear oil seal into the crankshaft rear oil seal housing. Ensure the seal is installed square. The seal will bottom out in the housing when fully installed
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel.

5.3L Engine

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Remove the automatic transmission flexplate.
  2.  
  3. Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

To install:


WARNING
For proper orientation, note the installation direction of the oil seal. The oil seal is a reverse-lip design. The part number is applied to the outside face of the seal, as shown.

  1. Inspect the seal and identify the part number markings for proper orientation.
  2.  
  3. Install the J 41479 cone and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone and push the seal to the rear seal bore. Install the oil seal with the part number markings facing away from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Thread the J 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal.
  8.  
  9. Align the oil seal into the tool.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the handle of the tool clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms into the cover bore.
  12.  
  13. Remove the J 41479.
