Valve Covers

Removal & Installation



3.5L & 3.7L Engines
  1. Remove the intake manifold.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Remove the following electrical connectors from the camshaft cover:

    The fuel injector
     
    The Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
     
    The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the camshaft cover ground wire bolt from the cover.

  9. Remove the ground wire from cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the camshaft cover bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the camshaft cover from the cylinder head.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the seals from the camshaft cover. Do not reuse the seals.
  16.  
  17. Clean and inspect the cylinder head sealing surface.

To install:

  1. Install a NEW camshaft cover seal into the camshaft cover groove.
  2.  
  3. Install NEW ignition coil seals into the camshaft cover grooves.
  4.  
  5. Place the camshaft cover onto the cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Install the camshaft cover bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position the ground wire to the camshaft cover. Ensure that the anti rotation tab is seated against the cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft cover ground wire bolt to the cover and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the following electrical connectors to the camshaft cover:

    The fuel injector
     
    The HO2S
     
    The ECT sensor
     

  14.  
  15. Install the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Install the intake manifold.
  18.  

5.3L Engine
Left Side

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) retainer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the ignition coil wire harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine harness clip from the ignition coil bracket stud.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the engine harness, as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Twist each plug wire 1 / 2 turn. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil bracket studs.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the old gasket.

To install:


NOTE
All gasket surfaces should be free of oil and/or other foreign material during assembly.


NOTE
DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.


NOTE
If the PCV valve grommet has been removed from the rocker cover, install a NEW grommet during assembly.

  1. Install a NEW rocker cover gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the PCV hose.
  8.  
  9. Apply threadlock to the threads of the ignition coil bracket studs.
  10.  
  11. Position the ignition coil bracket onto the rocker cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the ignition coil bracket studs and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Position the engine harness, as necessary.
  18.  
  19. Install the engine harness clip to the ignition coil bracket stud.
  20.  
  21. Connect the engine harness electrical connector to the ignition coil wire harness.
  22.  
  23. Install the CPA retainer.
  24.  
  25. Install the intake manifold cover.
  26.  

Right Side

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Remove the upper intake manifold sight shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the main electrical connector to the ignition coil wire harness.
  6.  
  7. Remove the harness clips.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the engine harness, if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coils. Twist each plug wire 1 / 2 turn. Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heater hose bracket bolt from the front of the right cylinder head.
  14.  
  15. If necessary, remove the ignition coil bracket studs from the rocker arm cover.
  16.  
  17. If necessary, remove the ignition coils and bracket from the rocker cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the vent hose from the valve rocker arm cover.

  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

  25. Remove the gasket from the rocker cover.
  26.  
  27. Discard the OLD gasket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the oil fill cap from the oil fill tube.
  30.  
  31. Remove the oil fill tube from the rocker cover, if required.
  32.  
  33. Discard the oil fill tube.
  34.  

To install:


NOTE
All gasket surfaces should be free of oil or other foreign material during assembly.


NOTE
DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.


NOTE
The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.


NOTE
If the oil fill tube has been removed from the rocker arm cover, install a NEW fill tube during assembly.

  1. Lubricate the O-ring seal of the NEW oil fill tube with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Insert the NEW oil fill tube into the rocker arm cover. Rotate the tube clockwise until locked in the proper position.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil fill cap into the tube. Rotate the cap clockwise until locked in the proper position.
  6.  
  7. Install a NEW rocker cover gasket into the valve rocker arm cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.
  10.  
  11. Install new rocker arm cover grommets, if necessary.
  12.  
  13. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and grommets and tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the vent hose to the valve rocker arm cover.
  16.  
  17. Apply threadlock to the threads of the bracket bolts.
  18.  
  19. If necessary, install the ignition coils and bracket to the rocker arm cover.
  20.  
  21. If necessary, install the ignition coil bracket studs to the rocker cover and tighten the studs to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the heater hose bracket bolt to the front of the right cylinder head.
  24.  
  25. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  26.  
  27. Position the engine harness, if necessary.
  28.  
  29. Install the harness clips.
  30.  
  31. Connect the main electrical connector feeding the ignition coils.
  32.  
  33. Install the CPA lock.
  34.  
  35. Install the upper intake manifold sight shield.
  36.
