Oil & Filter Change



3.5L & 3.7L Engines

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Remove the oil fill cap.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine shield.

  5. Remove the oil pan skid plate.

  7. Clean away all dirt and debris from the engine oil pan drain plug area.
  8.  
  9. Position an appropriate container under the engine oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan drain plug. Allow the engine oil to drain into the container.

  13. Position the container under the engine oil filter drain deflector.
    NOTE
    Ensure the old oil filter seal is not left on the engine block.

  15. Remove the oil filter using a suitable wrench. Allow the engine oil to drain to the oil filter drain deflector and into the container.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install a NEW oil filter. Tighten the filter to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Wipe the excess oil from the oil filter drain deflector.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan drain plug. Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Fill the crankcase with the proper type and amount of engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil fill cap.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check the oil pressure gauge for the appropriate pressure to build up.
  14.  
  15. Shut the engine off.
  16.  
  17. Inspect under the vehicle in the oil filter and oil pan drain plug areas for leaks.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil level indicator and check for the correct oil level. Add oil if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Install the oil pan skid plate.
  22.  
  23. Install the engine shield.
  24.  

5.3L Engine

Specific to:

Hummer H3 2006-2010

  1. Open the hood.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil fill cap.
  4.  
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Place a oil drain pan under the oil pan drain plug.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan drain plug.

  11. Allow the oil to drain completely.
  12.  
  13. Clean and inspect the oil pan drain plug, replace if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Clean and inspect the oil pan sealing surface, replace the oil pan if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Wipe any remaining oil from the drain plug hole and reinstall the oil pan drain plug until snug.
  18.  
  19. Position the drain pan under the oil filter.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil filter.

  23. Ensure that the oil filter gasket is still on the old filter if not, remove the oil filter gasket from the oil pan.

To install:

  1. Apply clean engine oil to the NEW oil filter seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the NEW oil filter. Tighten the oil filter to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the oil pan drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil drain pan from under the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with new engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine.
  14.  
  15. Inspect for oil leaks after engine start up.
  16.  
  17. Turn off the engine and allow the oil a few minutes to drain back into the oil pan.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil level indicator from the indicator tube.
  20.  
  21. Clean off the indicator end of the oil level indicator with a clean paper towel or cloth.
  22.  
  23. Install the oil level indicator into the oil level indicator tube until the oil level indicator handle contacts the top of the oil level indicator tube.
  24.  
  25. Again, remove the oil level indicator from the oil level indicator tube keeping the tip of the oil level indicator down.
  26.  
  27. Check the level of the engine oil on the oil level indicator.
  28.  
  29. If necessary, adjust the oil level by adding or draining oil.
  30.  
  31. Check for oil leaks.
  32.  
  33. Close the hood.
  34.
