NOTE
If the PCM receives a high engine temperature signal from the ECT, it adjusts fueling rates to protect the engine from damage due to overheating.

  1. Testing the ECT sensor:

    Disconnect the ECT sensor connector
     
    Connect an ohmmeter between the ECT sensor terminals
     
    With a cold engine, measure and note the ECT sensor resistance
     
    Reconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector
     
    Start and run the engine to reach proper operating temperature
     
    Turn off engine and disconnect ECT sensor electrical connector
     
    Measure and note the reading
     
    If there is no change between measurements, replace the ECT
