Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coils.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Apply dielectric compound to the spark plug boots and make sure no corrosion is present.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition coil bolts and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Install the intake manifold cover.
  10.  

2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Check stored fault messages.
  4.  
  5. Switch off ignition.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The engine oil fill cap
     
    Grasp the intake manifold cover by the lower right inboard corner and pull up to disengage the cover from the stud
     
    Grasp the intake manifold cover by the upper left corner and pull up to disengage the cover from the stud
     
    Remove the intake manifold cover

  9. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors (1).
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coils.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    The ignition coils into position over the spark plugs
     
    The ignition coil bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs (10 Nm)
     
    The ignition coil electrical connectors (1)

  3. Install the intake manifold cover:
    1. Place the intake manifold cover onto the engine over the studs.
    2.  
    3. Push down on the intake manifold cover directly over the lower right stud in order to engage the cover to the stud.
    4.  
    5. Push down on the intake manifold cover directly over the upper left stud in order to engage the cover to the stud.
    6.  
    7. Install the engine oil fill cap.
    8.

Testing



  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the ignition coil/module harness connector at the affected ignition coil/modules.
  2.  
  3. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the ground circuit terminal no. no. 1or A and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
    2.

  5. Ignition OFF for 90 seconds, test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the low reference circuit terminal no. 2 or B and ground.
    1. If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the Engine Control Module (ECM).
      NOTE
      If the ignition fuse is open, it will be necessary to test the spliced ignition circuits and the components for a short to ground.

  7. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal no. 4 or D and ground.
    1. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
    2.

  9. Exchange the affected ignition coil/module with the ignition coil/module of a good cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine, observe the scan tool Misfire Current Cylinder parameters.
    1. If the misfire transfers with the suspect ignition coil/module, replace as needed.
