Oil Pump

Inspection



  1. Check the oil pump case for worn shaft hole, clogged oil passage, worn rotor chamber, cracks, and other faults.
  2.  
  3. Check the oil seal lips for deformation, hardening, or wear. Replace if defective.
  4.  
  5. Inspect for foreign material and determine the source of the foreign material.
  6.  
  7. Clean all of the parts in cleaning solvent. Remove varnish, sludge, and dirt.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil pump for wear and scoring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the oil pump housing and engine front cover for scoring, damaged threads, cracks, or casting imperfections.
    NOTE
    Do not attempt to repair the oil pump housing. Replace the oil pump housing if damage is found.

  13. Inspect the oil pump gears for damage.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the pressure regulator valve for scoring, sticking, or burrs.
  16.  
  17. Check the valve for fitting condition and damage, and the relief valve spring for damage and deterioration. Replace the parts if defective.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the oil pump pickup tube and screen assembly for looseness, broken screen, or O-ring damage.
  20.  
  21. Replace as necessary.

Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Remove the hood.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt and tensioner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine front cover to water pump bolt.

  11. Remove and discard the engine front cover gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal with an appropriate tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the friction washer.
  16.  
  17. Disassemble the pressure relief valve.

  19. Remove the oil pump gerotor cover and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Clean all of the parts in cleaning solvent. Remove varnish, sludge, and dirt.

To install:

  1. Lubricate all oil pump parts with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the inner gear into the outer gear.
    NOTE
    If gears are improperly installed in the front cover, the gerotor cover will not bolt on.

  4.  
  5. Install the gears together into the front cover with the hub of the center gear facing the front cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pump gerotor cover and bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the oil pump gerotor cover bolts to 53 inch. lbs. (6 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the pressure relief valve piston.
  12.  
  13. Install the pressure relief valve spring.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the pressure relief valve plug to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install a new crankshaft front oil seal.
  18.  
  19. Install a new friction washer.
  20.  
  21. Position and install a new engine front cover gasket to the dowel pins.
  22.  
  23. Position and install the engine front cover.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine front cover to water pump bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the engine front cover bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  30.  
  31. Install the drive belt and tensioner.
  32.  
  33. Install the hood.
  34.  

2.2L, & 2.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing chain front cover. Refer to Timing Chain Cover and Seal removal and installation.
  4.  
  5. Disassemble the pressure relief valve.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump gerotor cover and bolts.

To assemble:

  1. Lubricate all oil pump parts with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the inner gear into the outer gear.

  13. Install the timing chain front cover. Refer to Timing Chain Cover and Seal removal and installation.
