REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The front driveshaft assembly consists of a sub-axle shaft and a driveshaft with two universal joints.

A constant velocity ball joint is used for both universal joints, which are factory packed with special grease and enclosed in sealed rubber boots. The outer joint cannot be disassembled except for removal of the boot.

  1. Remove the hubcap from the front wheel and then remove the center cap.
  2.
  3. Pull out the 4mm cotter pin and loosen but do not remove the spindle nut.
  4.
  5. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  6.
  7. Remove the wheel lug nuts and the wheel.
  8.
  9. Remove the spindle nut.
  10.
  11. Drain the transaxle.
  12.
  13. Using a Ball Joint Remover tool, remove the lower arm ball joints from the knuckle.
  14.

WARNING
Make sure that a floor jack is positioned securely under the lower control arm, at the ball joint. Otherwise, the lower control arm may jump suddenly away from the steering knuckle as the ball joint is removed.

  1. On Prelude model (1983), remove the damper fork bolt, damper locking bolt and the damper fork.
  2.
  3. To remove the driveshaft, hold the knuckle and pull it toward you. Then slide the driveshaft out of the knuckle. Pry the CV joint (at the transaxle end) out about 1 / 2 . Prying the axle outward causes an internal lock ring to come out of its locking groove. Pull the inboard joint side of the driveshaft out of the differential case.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the driveshaft or halfshaft into the transaxle assembly with a NEW spring locking clip.
  2.
  3. The splined fitting and clip must fit all the way into position; the clip will engage with a noticeable click. Reverse all the removal procedures.
  4.
  5. Torque the ball-joint nut to 25 ft. lbs. and always replace the cotter pin. Torque the spindle nut to 108 ft. lbs.
  6.
  7. If either the inboard or outboard joint boot bands have been removed for inspection or disassembly of the joint (only the inboard joint can be disassembled), be sure to repack the joint with a sufficient amount of bearing grease.
  8.

WARNING
Make sure the CV-joint sub-axle bottoms so that the spring clip may hold the sub-axle securely in the transaxle.
