Honda Accord/Civic/Prelude 1973-1983 Repair Guide

The clutch driven disc contains asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean clutch surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any clutch surface! When cleaning clutch surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

Check the clutch pedal height and if necessary, adjust the upper stop, so that the clutch and brake pedals rest at approximately the same height from the floor. First, be sure that the brake pedal free-play is properly adjusted.

The clutch pedal disengagement height should be 30mm minimum from the floor.

Accord and Prelude
  1. Pedal height should be 184mm measured from the front of the pedal to the floorboard (mat removed).
  3. Adjust by turning the pedal stop bolt in or out until height is correct. Tighten the locknut after adjustment.

All Models

Adjust the clutch release lever so that it has 3-4mm on Civic 1973-80 models or 4.4-5.4mm on Civic 1981-83 models of play when you move the clutch release lever at the transaxle with your hand. This adjustment is made at the outer cable housing adjuster, near the release lever on non-CVCC models. Less than 3mm of free-play may lead to clutch slippage, while more than 3mm clearance may cause difficult shifting.

Make sure that the upper and lower adjusting nuts are tightened after adjustment.

On Civic CVCC models, the free-play adjustment is made on the cable at the firewall. Remove the C-clip and then rotate the threaded control cable housing until there is 3-4mm free-play at the release lever. On Accord and Prelude models (1976-81), adjustment is made at the slave cylinder. Simply loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting nut until the correct free play is obtained. Free play should be 2.0-3.5mm at the release lever. On the 1982-83 Accord and Prelude, adjustment is made on the cable at the firewall. Remove the C-clip and rotate the threaded control cable until 5.0-6.5mm exists at the clutch release lever.
