The oxygen sensor (if so equipped) is mounted in the exhaust manifold. It is used to sense oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. If the fuel ratio is leaner than the stoichiometric ratio in the mixture (i.e. excessive amount of air), the exhaust gas contains more oxygen. On the other hand, if the fuel ratio is richer than the stoichiometric ratio, the exhaust gas hardly contains any oxygen.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from sensor.
- Remove the sensor from the manifold (spark plug removal is similar procedure).
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Do not handle or allow dirt on sensor tip. Torque sensor to about 30 ft. lbs. and reconnect the electrical connector.
