All Hondamatics use Dexron®II automatic transmission fluid. Only Dexron®II is available today. It replaces straight Dexron® fluid which is the actual recommendation for older models and can be mixed with it.
On the 1973-74 models, the transaxle fluid should be checked about once a month and replaced after the first 3,000 miles (every 24,000 miles thereafter). On the 1975-79 models, replace the fluid at 15,000 miles, then, every 30,000 miles thereafter. On the 1980-83 models, replace the fluid every 30,000 miles.
The automatic transaxle, uses a threaded dipstick with a crosshatch pattern. The dipstick is located beneath the battery. To check the fluid level, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it without turning it inward. That is, make sure the threads on the dipstick itself are sitting on top of the threads in the transaxle housing. Approximately 3 / 4 qt. will bring the fluid level from the ADD (lower) to the FULL (upper) line.
The fluid level is checked with the engine running. It is also necessary to warm up the transaxle by driving the vehicle a few miles, starting and stopping frequently.
- Park the vehicle on level ground and let the engine idle with the transaxle in Park .
- Unscrew the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it. DO NOT SCREW IT IN, as this would result in an erroneous reading.
- Using Dexron®II automatic transmission fluid, top off the transaxle, as necessary; add the fluid, if necessary, in small amounts, taking care not to overfill.
- Recheck the transaxle oil level.
DRAIN AND REFILL
- Drive the vehicle to bring the transaxle fluid up to operating temperatures.
- Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
- Place a fluid catch pan under the transaxle.
- Remove the drain plug, located on the bottom of the transaxle housing, and drain the transaxle.
- Using a new washer, install the drain plug. Using Dexron®II automatic transmission fluid refill the transaxle using the transaxle fluid dipstick hole until fluid reaches the Full mark on the dipstick; DO NOT overfill the transaxle.
Be sure that the quantity of fluid you add is always slightly less than the specified quantity, due to the remaining fluid left in the transaxle housing recesses.
