Honda Accord/Civic/Prelude 1973-1983 Repair Guide

Manual Steering Gear

The manual steering used on Hondas is of the rack and pinion design. This unit is packed with grease and therefore does not require a periodic fluid level check. However, inspect the box and associated rubber boot-type seals for obvious grease leaks or torn boots for 1973-78 models: 5,000 miles, then, at every 10,000 mile increments; for the 1979 models: 5,000 miles, 15,000 miles, then, at 15,000, then, at every 15,000 mile increments; for 1980-83 models: 15,000 miles, 30,000 miles, then, at 30,000 mile increments. Make repairs as necessary.

Repack with about 2 oz. of multipurpose grease.
