Lower Ball Joint

INSPECTION



Check ball joint play as follows:

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.

  1. Using a dial indicator clamp it onto the lower control arm and place the indicator tip on the steering knuckle, near the ball joint.
  2.  
  3. Using a pry bar, place it between the lower control arm and the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Work the ball joint to check for looseness; if the play exceeds 0.5mm, replace the ball joint.
  6.  

LUBRICATION



  1. Remove the screw plug from the bottom of the ball joint and install a grease nipple.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the ball joint with NLGI No. 2 multipurpose type grease.
  4.  
  5. Remove the nipple and reinstall the screw plug.
  6.  
  7. Repeat for the other ball joint.
  8.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



All Models
  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cotter pin and ball joint castle nut.
  6.  
  7. Using a Ball Joint Remover tool, separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Always install a NEW cotter pin. Torque the ball joint nut to 29-35 ft. lbs. Be sure to grease the ball joint once installation is complete.
