Honda Accord/Civic/Prelude 1973-1983 Repair Guide

Hondas equipped with a manual transaxle can be push-started. Make sure that the bumpers match as otherwise a damaged bumper and/or fender could result from push-starting. To push-start your Honda, turn the ignition switch ON , push the clutch in, and select 2nd or 3rd gear. Depress the accelerator pedal to set the choke as you normally would, then, release it. As the vehicle picks up speed (10-15 mph), slowly release the clutch pedal until the engine fires up.

If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, it cannot be push-started. Shifting the transaxle into gear has absolutely no effect until the transmission oil pump, driven by the engine, begins to run.
